Assuming they could come back free of the afflictions that led to their early demises I’d add:
Pete Farndon and James Honeyman Scott
John Entwistle and Keith Moon (would settle for just Entwistle)
Maurice Gibb (if Robin’s health could be restored)
Warren Zevon
Harry Nilsson
Also, not an early demise but someone I’d love to see perform in his prime: Cliff Edwards
Buddy Holly (4)
Stevie Ray Vaughan (3)
Freddie Mercury (3)
Jim Morrison (2)
Patsy Cline (2)
Billie Holiday (2)
Jerry Garcia (1)
John Denver (1)
Jim Croce (1)
Keith Relf (1)
Louis Armstrong (1)
Frank Zappa (1)
Captain Beefheart (1)
John Coltrane (1)
Sandy Denny (1)
Laura Nyro (1)
Pete Farndon (1)
James Honeyman Scott (1)
John Entwistle (1)
Keith Moon (1)
Maurice Gibb (1)
Warren Zevon (1)
Harry Nilsson (1)
Cliff Edwards (1)
Hank Williams (1)
You have to add Frank Zappa, although wind him back about fifteen years and give him the power of eternal middle-agedness. I’d love to have heard his reaction to e.g. George W Bush as president, the financial crisis, the Star Wars prequel trilogy, etc.
If you resurrected Captain Beefheart he would probably go straight back into retirement, so there wouldn’t be much point. Jim Morrison, Syd Barrett, Freddie Mercury had - in very different ways - run out of steam by the time they died. They’d said everything they ever planned to say, so there’s no sense of unfinished business. Zappa still had something in him.
Still, it would have been interesting to see what Buddy Holly came up with, and how he might have reacted to the British invasion. And Jimi Hendrix as a Parliament / Funkadelic sideman would have been excellent. The planned Hendrix-Emerson-Lake-Palmer would have been an absolute disaster of an abortion, but fascinating to watch.
Hell, The Rolling Stones needed a guitarist after Mick Taylor left. Hendrix over Ronnie Wood, any day. So, Hendrix and Zappa. The rest had basically reached the end of the road. If you resurrected Frank Sinatra, what would he do? Play Las Vegas a few times, then die again. Same with Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong. They would enjoy their retirement once again, and then die. Kurt Cobain would have probably ended up recording one more Nirvana album before the band split, at which point… well, you’d have to bring him back from the dead and then change him, otherwise he’d just shoot himself again. And if you change him, what’s the point of bringing him back? You’re not bringing him back any more, you’re bringing somebody else back.
Hank Williams
Townes Van Zandt
Luke Kelly
Pete Steele (Bassist/Vocalist from Type O Negative)
Ian Curtis
and also Mike Alexader, bassist of the metal band Evile, not least because I was slightly acquainted with him, and he the same age as me, which brought home the tragedy of people (not just musicians) dying young.
The only people on your list I listen to basically died because they got old (Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette), but I voted for Cobain and Hendrix, because it would be interesting to see what they could have done.
Although I understand and appreciate your comments, I can’t decide whether to add votes for these people to the summary. If you want to direct me to do so, please do.
