The book was apparently published in 1869, which might or might not mean Verne was aware of the end of slavery in the United States; or he might have simply been ignoring the then-recent changes.

It seems unlikely to me, considering that the American warship that the heroes originally embark upon is the Abraham Lincoln, that Verne would be unaware of the effects of the Civil War - or that he would be ignoring changes of that great a nature.
