Oh my god, she’s awesome.
Now that I’m at home and can access YouTube, here’s Yaz/Yazoo with Situation and Don’t Go.

I vote for Lisa Gerrard. I have a couple DCD albums and one or two of her solo albums. There’s a song on one of those where she really sounds like a man. Maybe a bigger fan than I can provide a link. I listen to them once in a while but don’t pay much attention to the song titles.
She has quite a powerful voice and a wide range.
How is the correct answer to this not Joss Stone?
She’s the answer to the question, “Who sounds like a black, middle-aged woman and not like a white British teen girl?”
Carol Pope of Rough Trade doing High School Confidential.
I came in to say Carole Pope too, but how can I resist this?
That’s the color version, which sounds much better than an earlier upload in black & white. The old version had so many “is that a dude?” comments a disclaimer was put on the video that yes, it’s a woman. She’s got a 4-octave voice and that’s not even the lowest, it’s just the URL I can access on my Touch while waiting for the midnight show of Source Code to start.
The guitar-playing Roche sister (Suzzy?) has a pretty deep baritone too. Hammond Song (it’s a shame that the sound quality of that video is so poor. It’s an unusual and eerie song. The iTunes studio version is well worth a download).
And Gen from the Genitorturers can also do raspy metal vocals when she wants to, though she doesn’t go all the way to the Cookie Monster range.
Hmm Annie Lennox hasn’t been mentioned yet (she’s got a deep voice, but not necessarily masculine).
Victoria Legrand from Beach House. In fact, I had no idea the singer was a woman until a year of listening to their album.
A very interesting subject! I love deep female voices especially those which sound mannish!

Anita Baker has a manly voice too…
And Ana Carolina - - YouTube tenor - like voice!
Kathleen Turner played the role of Chandler’s transvestite father Charles Bing a/k/a Helena Handbasket, and sang It’s Raining Men. She was so believable.
THAT SCARED ME.
Or scarred me, either way.
When I saw the title of this, I thought of a song she sings (The Weakness In Me). Until I googled it, I was under the impress a man sung it. I still thought it was a man until, I wikied her.
Nevermind, this was another singer. Joan Armatrading. I still can’t believe she sings like though.
2 pages, and No one’s mentioned Cher?!
I came in to offer Vas Kallas from industrial metal group Hanzel und Gretyl, but I think Ms. Gossow has her beat.
What, not low enough for anyone? (or no Bowie fans here?)
How about this one? (it takes a bit for the song to kick in but it’s worth watching the whole thing)
Mavis Staples, particularly nowadays when her voice is on its way out.
