Which first: change domain registrar or hosting site?

I have a single simple Web site, and have been looking for better deals both on hosting and domain registration. I’ve previously changed registrars, but it’s been a long time, and I’ve never changed hosts.

So which should I do first? What are the pros and cons of each option? How long should I expect each transition to take? How much time should I allow between the two processes?

In case it makes a difference, I’m planning on moving registration from GoDaddy to either Namecheap or Dreamhost, and hosting from RCN to whichever of those two I choose.

Thanks.

It pretty much doesn’t matter. When you change hosts you’ll go to your registrar and changed DNS. When you change registrars you’ll move your entire record over wholesale, including DNS, whatever it is at the time.

I guess change the registrar first. It’ll take a day or so. Then once you’re all set on the new registrar, change your host.
