We really need to get something for our hardwood and porcelain tile floors. We’re thinking of Swiffer, just because their advertising has invaded our brains. But does anyone have any particular recommendations and/or horror stories?
Even if you buy a Swiffer, you don’t have to use their branded wipes. Other companies offer similar wipes that fit on the Swiffer mop head. My mother will wrap a paper towel around the head and use that for dry mopping. And I bought from Amazon a microfiber thing that wraps around the mop head with elastic to hold it in place. (After it gets dusty or dirty I just put it in the laundry with everything else.)
It’ll set you back $400 but I’ve had my Dyson V10 for 5 years and it’s perfect for hard floors. The front end of the soft head attachment is open enough that it gets the dust off of quarter rounds like a charm.
I have a Shark Vertex Duoclean cordless stick vac that does a great job on my ceramic tile in my kitchen and my hardwood floors. The roller has a soft fin and brush combination that works very well. It’s not as great on short carpet or throw rugs.
The other item I use is a Bissell PowerFresh steam mop. I like it much more than a Swiffer, even though it requires a corded connection. Swiffers just never seemed to work well on textured tile. The mop heads just go in the next wash and they’re good as new.
Swiffers are great for dusting elevated surfaces like bookshelves, tables, or your car’s dashboard, but I’ve found them pretty useless on the floor unless it’s already very clean. Any sort of crumbs, kitty litter, or dirt just gets pushed around and you have to pick it up some other way. I just use a broom and dust pan for quick tidying, and a vacuum cleaner followed by wet mopping for more extensive cleaning. A lightweight sweeper type vacuum would be a good middle ground. The important thing for hard surfaces is that you don’t want a beater bar/brush bar that spins, those are only for rugs/carpets, you want a hard floor brush.
The steamer mop heads are “stringy,” rather than like a sponge or fiber towel. This seems to work better in the depressions and other features of the tile. I don’t use any type of cleaner or detergent…just filtered water.
