Boise State Broncos beat University of Oklahoma in overtime.
The Sooners were heavily favored, but Boise State never gave up.
Thus the thread title…
If you did not watch this game, you missed one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen. Oklahoma tied the score with 1:30 to go, then intercepted Boise on the next position to go ahead! Boise State came back to tie the score at the end of regulation (I swear I am not making this up) with a pass and lateral.
Sooners had the ball first in OT and scored on their first play from scrimmage. On fourth down Boise State scored a touchdown, then went for two and made it on the ol’ “Statue of Liberty” play (again, I am not making this up).
Yow.
I’m not a big football fan. I didn’t go to either Boise State or Oklahoma. In fact, my alma mater quit playing football after my freshman year. But this game was worth watching.
BTW, “Statue of Liberty” play:
The quarterback takes the snap, then fakes making a pass. One of the running backs holds back as if to block. Then the quarterback drops him the ball (in one of a variety of ways) and the running back takes off. Done correctly, the play fakes the defense out of its shoes. The name comes from the original type of play, in which the running back ran around the back of the quarterback, who held up the ball in an imitation of the Statue of Liberty (ball = torch) and then dropped it behind his back. The Boise State variation has the quarterback do a full follow-through on the “pass”, with the result that the ball ends up in his hand behind his back, where the running back takes it and heads for the hills.
This reminds me of another super-trick play called the “fumblerooskie”, in which the quarterback puts the ball on the ground immediately after taking the snap, thus allowing any offensive player to pick it up and run with it. It’s really hard to do right, but it can be quite effective and entertaining, since down in the trenches it’s impossible to tell who has the ball! :smack:
What an incredible finish…those plays were absolutely amazing. Too bad Boise State, which finishes with a perfect 13-0 record, won’t get any sort of chance to play for a national title. :dubious: (I hadn’t realized that Boise State had wallopped bowl victors Oregon State and Hawaii previously in the season.)
Oh, and you forgot to mention that on the fourth-down play on which Boise State scored their overtime touchdown, the Boise State quarterback went into motion as a wide receiver, and one of the wide receivers took the snap and threw the touchdown pass.
Also, it bears mentioning that this—
—occurred on a fourth down and eighteen, and the lateral was essentially a planned reverse (albeit executed fifteen yards downfield) that completely fooled the defense.
And the two-point conversion that gave Oklahoma the tie with 1:30 left was played three times, (first a penalty was called for pass interference, second a penalty against the Sooners, and finally on the third try they scored cleanly.)
Yeah, what a game. I just about had a heart attack rooting for Boise. I only watched two games today (Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl) and at least got some consolation after watching Michigan get trampled.
I just saw the highlight of the lateral and the rest of the 4th quarter on the foxsports website. I’m waiting for the overtime highlights to be posted somewhere before I can go to sleep.
Stayed up 'till 1:00 to watch that game, and boy was it ever worth it. Perhaps the greatest football game I’ve ever seen. Even the early scoring was full of drama. Just incredible. We were kind of shocked when they went for the win or loss on the 2-pt conversion, but if you can execute a fake like that, why not? Incredible game. I’m an Ohio State fan, and I know I wouldn’t be alone in saying: darn straight, Boise State deserves a shot at the national title.
Let’s all hope that this puts a foot up someone’s butt to institute a playoff system.
Count me as one who is kicking himself for turning off the game at halftime to go to sleep (I thought BSU had it in the bag, and did I really need to miss sleep to see another bowl game?)
What I want to know now is why Notre Dame isn’t treated as derisively as Boise State was? There schedule is crap, the few tough games they did play they got their butts handed to them, and still they rate BCS consideration? They don’t deserve to be ranked.
