Here are the facts that I remember. Can our team of Dopers tell me who this man was?
He walked on the moon. He spoke at my high school in the early nineties. He was not Shepard, Aldrin, Armstrong, or anyone that would stand out.
He spoke about riding the lunar rover, which would make him on later missions. He told a story of hitting a bump and feeling that he would fly out of the rover and kill himself.
His conclusion was a long summary about his faith in Jesus Christ which struck me as something for a public school to allow (but that isn’t the debate here)
I don’t remember the guy’s name, but I only ask because my Dad is saying I’m crazy that any moon astronaut would have spoken at our school.
“Three LRVs were driven on the Moon, one on Apollo 15 by astronauts David Scott and Jim Irwin, one on Apollo 16 by John Young and Charles Duke, and one on Apollo 17 by Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt.”
Charles Duke sounds right. From the blurb of his bio (heh) “Moonwalker”:
“The early excitement and glamour of Dotty’s marriage to an astronaut too soon wore thin because of neglect and indifference. But working through her despair, Dotty found hope in Jesus Christ. She committed her life to him and made a new committment to her relationship with Charlie. Charlie eventually heard the truth of the gospel and turned his life over to the Lord. Their personal discovery of Christ worked the needed miracle in thier lives, and their incredible conversion opened the doors to adventures even more satisfying than walking on the Moon. So satisfying, in fact, that compared to being a Christian, Charlie Duke calls walking on the Moon “The dust of my life”. Today, Charlie and Dotty Duke share a worldwide speaking ministry.”
