Me too. I wonder if it was the same three movies.
While I’ve seen parts of most of the movies on the list, I’ve only seen Lord of the Rings all the way thru. None of them would make my top 10 list. So I didn’t bother to vote.
Based on the very scientific method of asking myself, “Which of these would I watch right now if they were all starting on different cable channels,” I chose Pulp Fiction.
But I was surprised at how watchable this Top Ten was. The Dark Knight and Fight Club are really the only two that I have no desire to watch again.
What a sausage fest.
This. So much so that I’m pretty sure there are two movies on that list without a single line of dialogue by a named woman.
Just for the hell of it, I attached the IMDb Ranking Number to the left of this group so we could see how different the SDMB feeling is from theirs.

Pulp Fiction is quite possibly my favorite movie ever. Shawshank is also fantastic, though.
I can’t help wondering how many Voters it will take at SDMB to approximate the IMDb spread.

Anybody want to speculate why our numbers are so far off from theirs?
I went with The Good, The Bad, The Ugly as best of the ones I have seen, but that’s not saying much as I’ve only seen three of the films on the list.
Frankly none of the three that I have seen and are on this list would make my personal top-ten, the rest don’t even register.
I’ve only seen three of them. Most of those are not to my taste. I picked Lord of the Rings.
I really have to agree with you regarding the Dark Knight; there’s no way it should be on any top list. I suspect that the death of Heath Ledger plays a part.
But you people complaining that the entire list is awful? Really? The Godfather is awful?

I count 3:
12 Angry Men
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Shawshank Redemption.
Well that was easier than I had anticipated. I’ve only seen three of the movies on the list, but one of them (Return of the King) is in my personal top ten.
Huh. I picked LOTR: Return of the King, even though I think The Fellowship of the Ring is a much better picture.
I am clearly not a typical IMDB voter. My own personal top ten (at least at the moment; ask me again tomorrow) would probably be:
Casablanca
Breaker Morant
The Incredibles
Limitless
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars
Aliens
Blade Runner
True Lies
LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
I confess I have never understood the love for The Shawshank Redemption. It’s a perfectly good movie, but it was not the “OMFG Transcendantly-Awesome Movie!!!” for me that it clearly is for so many people.
Of the ones I have seen “Shawshank”
Got my vote.
Strangely, the IMDB top 50 according to women is pretty similar:
http://www.imdb.com/chart/female
Judging by comments here, on the Dope, I had taken it that women didn’t like all the Grim-Dark stuff that you get in Dark Night, for example. Yet, it’s still in the top 10.
Agreed. There’s no underlying message, the cinematography is passable, the acting is alright, I’ve never heard anyone mention the soundtrack, it’s not particularly fun, it’s not particularly sad, it’s just a movie about a wimpy white dude in jail, who sits around chatting with Morgan Freeman for two hours.
The only theory I’ve ever been able to come up with is that it pings some magical location in your average white-collar worker, who knows that at any moment he could get sent to jail for the pot he has in his cabinet (or whatever petty crime he commits regularly), and fears becoming the wimpy white dude in jail one day.
