Which of these "staples" do you have in your house?

We have large (3 gallon maybe?) airtight containers with flour and sugar in them. We have separate large Tupperware containers with powdered sugar, brown sugar, and… uh… it’ like a large-grained brown sugar but loose, like regular sugar. I forget what it’s called. It’s rare that we actually use any of this stuff to any significant degree, usually just around the holidays. The flour tends to get replaced before it gets used completely. But we do it keep it on hand just in case.

We always have a container of table salt on hand as well as one of Kosher salt for baking. There’s also a jar of fleur de sel up there somewhere. Finally I have a box of pickling salt in the back of the pantry.

We have a large box of baking soda that we got for… something. I don’t remember. But it’s big, like the size of a cereal box. It’s still mostly full. We have a regular-sized can of baking powder in the cupboard as well.

Of all the stuff listed in the OP probably the smallest amount of anything we have on hand is the baking powder, which is just a regular Clabber Girl can. 8oz maybe? But I try to keep an unopened one on hand, so… well, actually a pound of that is probably still less than anything else listed.

We keep several pounds of brown and wild rice on hand, as well as assorted pastas. Beans too, although I’ve slowly transitioned to canned beans because they’re so much easier. But there’s still a few pounds of dried pinto beans in the cupboard for… reasons? We always keep a supply of both canned and frozen vegetables in the pantry/freezer.

I noted in the thread on keeping money hidden in the house that post-Covid I’ve been more diligent about stocking up and keeping stocked household essentials. Food is no exception. I’m a diabetic so I tend to eat lots of meat and veggies rather than grains and pastas, but my wife and kids like that stuff and it is good for food security. So in the pantry it goes.

We also keep a stock of canned chili, soups, and stews – basic Campbell’s stuff – on hand for those nights that we want an quick and easy meal that’s no more involved than stirring a pot. I want to start canning my own but for the moment I still get the commercial stuff.

We also continuously keep a supply of olive and canola oil, yeast, basic spices as well as mixes like Mrs. Dash, Montreal Steak and taco seasoning, peanut butter, condiments like mustard and ketchup, tea, and probably some other stuff that I’m forgetting in the cupboard at all times. I like to have an unopened bottle of pretty much everything in the cupboard always. Of course, we rotate all this stuff so no one specific thing sits in the cupboard long-term.

I always keep a collection of hot sauces on the dining room table: Tabasco (green and chipotle…mmm…), Tapatio, rooster sauce, maybe something else if it looks interesting enough when I’m at the store. I’m not much for added salt but I do keep a pepper grinder on the table.

In the freezer we try to keep a supply of ground turkey, hamburger, chicken, pork, and vegetables available. I eat a lot of chicken and pork and the rest of the family likes hamburger or ground turkey for… everything. We have ~20 cubic foot upright freezer and it’s usually stuffed full.

Despite all of the above we rarely have sweets in the kitchen. The baking supplies are more for emergencies rather than regular use. We almost never have cookies or ice cream or sodas in the house, if we want something that isn’t water my wife and kids will drink Crystal Light and I drink tea.

We do keep vegetables and fruit on hand pretty constantly but we go through that stuff so fast that I usually only buy a couple of day’s worth at a time. I do have a bunch of frozen berries in the freezer though.

My kneejerk reaction is to say “coffee” but a lot of people, younger people especially IME, tend to frequent Starbucks and similar coffee houses rather than brewing it at home. So… I don’t know if that’s still (or ever was) true.

sugar, salt, pepper, coffee

I’m virtually certain I’ve never had a kitchen (even in my shared college apartment) which didn’t have Salt, Sugar and Flour.

And for at least 30 years, I’ve never been without baking soda, baking powder and yeast.

I bet right now I have three kinds of wheat flour as well as at least two kinds each of rice and almond flour.

Why yes, I’m a baker. How did you know?

We have all five.

@Dinsdale, would you like me to insert a poll for you or a link in the OP to @Thudlow_Boink poll?

ETA: Good point, we have at least 3 types of sugar, 3 types of flour and 2 types of salt.

All 3.

A few different kinds of sugar- white, brown, demerara.

A couple different kinds of salt- iodized table salt and kosher (and maybe some fancy flake finishing salt hiding somewhere)

Probably about 20 lbs of various flours- AP, bread, several sorts of Italian flours- semola, tipo 00, and some other pizza/bread flours. A few types of whole-wheat as well. My wife likes to bake!

Baking powder and baking soda are on-hand as well, although not in huge quantities. Just the usual canisters and boxes from the grocery store.

Either would be fine. Apologies for my continued ineptitude.

No problem, I’ll add a link to the existing poll. Probably best at this point.

All three if we’re counting brown sugar.

Salt, yep couple of varieties
sugar, yes, white, brown, confectioners and honey
flour, yes plus a small amount of corn meal
I do have bread but need to get more, almost out
I also have several packages of a variety of pastas in the cupboard
several pounds of a variety of beans, rice, barley and for some reason, dried peas
about out of coffee, need to get more
just bought a jar of peanut butter ($10.75 :astonished: wtf?)
cheese, just a couple of pounds of sharp cheddar at the moment, need to get more
saltine crackers
pickles, baby sweets and full size dills
yellow chili peppers
those are most of the gotta have staples at Castle Vader, plus, yanno the actual staples in the swingline

eta, forgot the baking powder and soda, got those too

Now I feel there is something wrong with me.
I make cakes, all I need for that is eggs.
I do eat healthy. I had a sweet potato for lunch.

All three. I bake, but I’d need all three even if I didn’t bake. How can someone have a house without salt? And yes, baking soda and powder. And multiple types of flour.

My guesses for what’s found in the highest percentage of kitchens:

cold cereal
canned soup
soda

The first two for emergency just have to eat SOMETHING RIGHT NOW and soda as a necessity of living.

I don’t bake but I do have some AP flour for dredging meat and roux and stuff. I also don’t eat sweets but there is some sugar in the pantry for sauces and dips and whatnot. There are a bunch of salts, at least 10. The only reason I have baking powder is for making chicken wings crispy but I haven’t got around to trying that yet.

All three.

Flour - 100% whole wheat, bread, AP, at least 10-15 lbs.
Salt - not counting in shakers, 2 spare cardboard cannisters, plus kosher and pickling salt.
Sugar - @ 2 lbs turbinado, @ 5 lbs white, @ 2 lbs brown, @ 1 lb powdered

Baking powder and soda.

Not mentioned, but 1lb of yeast as well.

But I would figure the most commonly stored staples for most people would be dried pasta. It’s cheap, it’s easy, it lasts forever and it works as main or sides. I probably have 4 or more pounds worth of various types.

What do you use them for, besides baking?

Some people are on sodium-restricted diets, or are just trying to cut down on their salt intake.

And of course, some people rely extensively on prepared foods, rather than cooking from scratch.

I have all, including baking powder, plus yeast, since I make bread (challah) every week. Plus pepper and dozens of spices and condiments like chili paste, curry paste, sesame oil, fish sauce, etc.

I’m not exactly a master chef, but dinners at our house include chicken curry, Impossible lasagna, salmon, creamy braised white beans, meatloaf, and various pasta dishes (including occasional mac & cheese).

I’m curious: to those who don’t keep any of the three items, what sort of meals do you eat at home that you don’t need sugar or salt?

Multiple salts, sugars, flours. Baking soda and powder, and corn starch (don’t forget the corn starch!) Multiple pastas, rices, grains, nuts. Multiple oils and vinegars. And lots of spices.

And bread.

We have all three, but honestly, we don’t use much sugar or salt. Especially sugar. I can’t think of anything we make that uses sugar, except very rarely (less than once per year) when my wife will make a cake or cookies for grandchildren.

We also use very little flour.

On the other hand, we apparently cook a lot less than most people posting here.

Salt, sugar, flour, baking soda and baking powder, plus dried beans, rice, lentils, pasta etc… For what it’s worth though, I can’t remember the last time I used baking soda for cooking–there’s a lot of it in my home, but most of it is deodorizing my freezer, waiting to be used to scrub things (it’s a nice mild abrasive for tea stains and the like), or waiting to be a fire extinguisher in case I start another fire on my stovetop (it works really well!).

We use very little sugar or salt for any meals. Rarely put a salt shaker on the table. AFAIK, they are used only for baking - entirely my wife’s province.

We stock only 1 of these 3 - cereal.
