 Well. I knew I shoulda stayed out of this thread.
I’ll add pretty much all of the hip-hop artists I loved in the mid nineties - the Wu-Tang collective, Nas, Busta Rhymes, etc. They all used to have something - a creative energy, maybe - but that’s all gone now, and they’re just in it for the money. Sigh. But still: KRS-1. Really? That sucks.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If it is any consolation, Wu Tang’s latest, 8 Diagrams, is really good.
Are you really from Denmark? What is the hip-hop scene like there?
It’s also not Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, or Hillary Swank. These women are still quite visible in the public eye and are working regularly. The period when the career of this actress seemed promising predates Berry and Swank but is about the same time Stone arrived on the scene.

How about Meg Tilly, Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner for “Agnes Of God”? Last time I saw her was in the 1993 remake of “Body Snatchers”. Let’s see… Whoa!! According to IMDB she’s done absolutely nothing since 1995!!
I’ll second the mention of ZZTop. Saw them in 1986 on the Afterburner tour. Shockingly disappointing live act. Just going through the motions, except for a rousing version of “Cheap Sunglasses”.

I hear you. My eight year old son has recently fallen in love with Calvin and Hobbes which has caused me to appreciate again how good it was. It would be nice if there was SOMETHING else from Mr. Watterson.

I was so psyched when Berkley Breathed came back with Opus, but some weeks he’s started recycling olides almost word-for-word from Bloom County. I’d rather he’d just left it alone and let me have the memories.

I was going to mention a certain actress who I was rather fond of years ago. However, due to a number of poor professional choices and the fact she apparently forgot how to act, this person is generally regarded (if she’s recalled at all) as such an annoying talentless joke that I dare not mention her name lest people doubt my intelligence and sanity.
All that’s causing anyone to doubt your intelligence and sanity right now is your obtuse unwillingness to type the fucking name of the person you’re talking about.
Just get on with it, for fuck’s sake, and stop attention-whoring.

Sorry about that. I wasn’t trying to be an attention whore. It’s just that I’m at least a little embarrassed about initially liking this performer.
It was Shelley Long.
As for other promising performers who ultimately proved disappointing, I don’t think anybody expected Lauryn Hill to professionally and personally flame-out like she did.
A lesser known one: The Del Fuegos. They went from a promising band with a raw early-Stones sound to beer pitchmen in record time.

Thanks, but I’ll just stick with the old stuff, I think. And yes, I am Danish, and as in most Western European countries we’ve got a pretty decent hip-hop scene. I prefer when Danes rap in Danish, Germans in German, etc. to give it a bit of a local flavour.
The Danish scene’s 199-somethings claim to fame came from the fact that we produced some fabulous turntablists, like DJ Noise and DJ Static. In the 90s the hip-hop scene in Denmark really brought some creative minds together. Now it seems they’re all doing dancehall instead. [/hijack]

Well that was a bit of a letdown. Especially since Shelley Long appears to be more of a one-hit wonder than anything else.

Here I thought it was going to be Courtney Love ( who actually won some acting awards for People vs. Larry Flynt )
Anywya, I’m on board with the Scientology hate too. Immediate disappointment when I find out that someone is a clam.
Nobody’s mentioned Metallica yet. Anyone who wasn’t familiar with Metallica would probably think that St. Anger was performed by a different (and crappy) band altogether after listening to anything up to the Black Album. I was also put off by Lars Ulrich’s attitude towards Napster and kissing RIAA’s ass.
Count me in on being disappointed by celebrities who are sucked into the Scientology black hole. What benefit or purpose do all these celebrities think they are getting from joining this craptrap organization?! I love watching Rain Man, but dammit, Tom, I just can’t watch you anymore without also thinking about Elron Hubby and his money-grubbing scheme.

Now you know why I was reluctant to identify her.
Another promising but disappointing performer (especially if you’re a Seattle Seahawk fan) was Brian Bosworth. His signing and subsequent floperoo marked the beginning of a dismal period for the Seahawks that consisted of mediocre-to-wretched teams, jerkass owners, fan apathy, and the ongoing threat the franchise would be moved. It wasn’t until Mike Holmgren was hired that things finally turned around.
**Ozzy Osbourne ** – Bark at the Moon tour at the Hampton (VA) Collisium. Metallica (Supporting the newly-released “Masters of Puppets” album) opened. 'Twas the last North American show of their tour. Metallica came out. Kicked ass, took names. James Hetfield wasn’t even playing guitar (He’d broken his wrist skateboarding down a hill and continued the tour performing vocals, with guitar technician John Marshall playing rhythm guitar – “Wiki cite”)!!
Ozzy walked through his set.
The highlight was the Metallica boys joining Ozzy for his ubiquitous “Paranoid” encore.

I think she made the conscious decision to give up acting to work on her writing career. From what I’ve read, she’s quite good.
Just to put in a good word, I saw Dylan a few years back at the Wiltern, and he absolutely melted the place, burned it down. Awesome show.
I went to the Long Beach blues festival and BB King was the big name. All through the show, the emcee would keep shouting, “coming up soon BB KIIIIIIING!”
Dude came out, did two songs, and walked off.
“Ladeeez and gentlemen, BB KIIIIIIING”! We were not amused.
Fela Kuti did a real short show at the Greek many years ago. Maybe 40 minutes and then they split. People were pissed.
Elliott Smith. Why the fuck did he have to kill himself, when he seemed to be turning his life around (i.e. getting off the hard drugs) and continuing to make great music in the process?
