Channel Islands is off the beaten path a bit, but so close to so many people probably accounts for the moderate visitation. I wonder if people are counting the Visitor Center, which is easy to reach in Ventura? My daughter and I did the boat ride out the Santa Cruz Island last year - nice hike and fun day trip - saw hundreds of dolphins from the boat.
Another one that’s out of the way is Great Basin - it’s an alpine oasis surrounded by high desert.
I’m pleasantly surprised that we have, as of now, 5 Isle Royale visitors.
For some reason I neglected to select Acadia. I thought you could go back and edit poll selections (?)
I just returned from Glacier a few weeks ago. We had beautiful sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures over the course of 12 days. Three days after we got home, they closed Going to the Sun Road due to a snowstorm.
Also, I’d love to hear tales from our lone America Samoa visitor, @J.1.3235.
A mere two National Parks for me- Everglades and Great Smoky Mtns. As a lifelong Michigan resident who has often visited the U.P., I’m sad to admit I’ve never made it to Isle Royale.
If and when the National Parks ever reopen, I really need to visit more of them!
The latest new one I’ve been to is the New River Gorge park. I’ve been wanted to stop to see the famous bridge carrying Highway 19 over the gorge since before it was a national park, but the few times I’ve been able to take the road, it’s been nighttime or foggy. My brother and I even stopped at the rest stop there a couple of decades ago but couldn’t see a thing due to the fog.
I finally got my chance earlier this year and it was great. Not so much the view of the bridge - it’s just a big bridge, but the views of the valley from the lookout trail were spectacular, especially, oddly enough, a tinier bridge at the bottom of the gorge, since its remoteness adds to the sense of hugeness of the gorge.
My dad and stepmom spend theor summers in Northern Minnesota, so I’m hoping to have some time at Voyageurs on a visit, someday. They winter in Phoenix, so I might be able to get to Saguaro or even Joshua Tree.
I missed New River Gorge on the poll. We’ve been to a total of 12 or 13, with hopes of going to more. The act of creating national parks is, to me, in the top 5 greatest inventions of humankind.
The view looking up from the river there ain’t half bad either.
However, if you decide to go down there, don’t be like the person I encountered who decided to go the wrong way on the steep, very narrow one way road going back to the rim. They met a shuttle van carrying rafters that was heading up and got stuck in a ditch when they pulled over to let it pass.
My Yellowstone trip was formative - I was nine and the fires of '88 were burning. Yosemite just doesn’t feel like it’s a real-life place, even seeing it with your own eyes. Sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā is likewise unreal, as is swimming ʻOheʻo Gulch.
Count me as another who visited Pinnacles before its National Park destination.
When I click on the “Vote” button (in the blue rectangle), it just takes me to where I was before down in the thread. When I scroll up from there, the blue “Vote” button reappears.
Laptop with Windows. Don’t know which theme (or how to determine).
mmm
ETA: Ok, weirdly I am able to re-do my vote in Poll #1 but not in Poll #2.
