Which was the best Roger Moore Bond film?

Pick one.

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME: you’ve got the iconic opening sequence, a terrific Bond girl, one heck of a gadget, Moore actually doing cold-blooded hijinks, and Jaws as “menacing” instead of MOONRAKER-era comic relief.

For Your Eyes Only, without a doubt.

After the wretched excess and puerility of the 1970s Bond films, especially the Star Wars-influenced Moonraker, this was a welcome return to the older Bond, as indicated by the initial reference to Tracy as the very first shot in the film, and the tying up of the Blofeld loose end. As in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, they got awayu fro m excessive gadgetry for any serious purposes, and got back to Bond’s self-reliance and his love of gaming. And, for the first time since OHMSS, the plot was mainly derived from a Fleming story. It was Bond Lite, but it harked back to the best of early Bond.
I thought the next film, Octopussy, started out well (I could ignore some of the typical Bond idiocy in the opening) , but they got really stupid halfway through.

The Roger Moore films, IMO, as a whole were not very good, but I’m going with The Spy Who Loved Me, for two reasons: the Lotus Esprit submarine, and Jaws.

The Spy Who Loved Me, for two other reasons: Naomi.

Spy Who Loved Me. Barbara Bach.

A View To A Kill - loved Grace Jones and Christopher Walken.

I agree. It’s probably also as close to a badass as Moore got during his tenure as 007. On the downside, there “Blofeld” begging for his life and offering to buy Bond a delicatessen, and Lynn-Holly Johnson as a Bond girl even Bond wouldn’t sleep with.

A View To A Kill was the absolute nadir of the Bond franchise. Octopussy was almost as bad. The Spy Who Loved Me was good, but The Man With the Golden Gun wins out, if for no other reason than I always wanted to own Scaramanga’s junk.

The OP’s clearly been hard at work this morning, but I’m having trouble locating the “Which was the best George Lazenby Bond film?” poll.

For me it’s a toss-up between Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Live and Let Die:

The Spy Who Loved Me:

The answer is right in front of you, and they can open very large doors.

Octopussy is the Best Bond Film

Mind you, that was written years before Casino Royale(the new one), which I think is now the best Bond film.

MoonRaker - as it was the only one I ever paid to sit in a theater to watch - yes, I was 12 at the time.

Moore’s Bond was a poor caricature of the original Bond. Don’t know if it was the times, the producers or Moore himself. But the Bond of Connery and the books was cold blooded and a bit serious. Moore was a joke.

The Man With the Golden Gun was all about hubris and I loved the way Scaramonga bit it. That was worth it all by itself. Nice Macau travelogue sequence too.

Live and Let Die

Paul McCartney’s theme song
Yaphet Kotto as the villain
Alligators
World-record speedboat jumps

And Jane Seymour

**CalMeacham[/B’s post hit it on the head for me. Jane Seymour’s turn as Bond girl (as well as the boat stunts) nearly got Live and Let Die my vote though.

I have a great affection for the first three, but The Spy Who Loved Me is the clear winner. The set designs, the theme song, the hottest Moore bond girl (Barbara Bach), the underwater Lotus, the cinematography in Egypt–just fantastic.

After this film, they just get progressively worse, although For Your Eyes Only is entertaining enough.

I’ve only seen For Your Eyes Only and the one with Katanga (sp?) played by Yaphet Koto. Just not much of a Roger Moore fan I’m afraid. In fact, when someone mentions “Bond girls” I think he should be in the list. Rewatching some of the Yaphet film just the other day I marvelled still at just how implausable and corny it was.

So… For Your Eyes Only.
