my dog chewed up the wires that go to the a/c unit and I don’t know which ones go together. there is a black and yellow wire coming out of the a/c unit and there is red, white, green, and blue wires coming from the house but the green and blue wires are cut on the end like they weren’t being used at all. i think its y to r and w to blk but not sure.
All the connections should be labeled at the screw terminals. If not, look up “thermostat wiring” on Google and look at the diagrams under images.
It’s typical to have unused wires. Regular heat and AC use four or five wires, but heat pump systems with backup heat can use a dozen. The cable often has more wires than the system uses.
none of the wires are labeled the yellow is coming from the side of (i think relay) and the black is coming from the bottom of it. i’ve googled all day for thermostat wiring but the only things i got was installing a thermostat and replacing a thermostat.
Look at how the thermostat end is wired, and then how the A/C end is wired.
when i take the face plate off the thermostat the wires that i see are r, y, w, and g. I’m not sure which wires go the the heating unit and which wires go to the a/c unit outside. i guess i just assumed that wiring schematics for the black and yellow wires that come out of the a/c unit were universal. and i don’t know why there are a green and blue wire coming out of the wall if they didn’t need to be hooked up.
so…gets points for that…
gets points for what?
There’s a cable going from the thermostat to the furnace /air handler, and then there’s a cable from the furnace to the AC compressor. It sounds like it’s that cable that got chewed.
Did the dog eat all of the wire at one end, so you can’t identify where the wires went? Usually, when wires get cut or chewed, there’s wire coming and going from the break so you can tell what’s what.
i’m not sure how the wires were connected in the first place. i don’t know if they were just twisted together or what cuz i didn’t find any connectors. but yea she chewed them right where they would of been connected.
i’m pretty sure she was chewing and pulling cuz she likes to play tug of war and i guess she won lol. i was just hopeing that i would be able to connect the wires back myself rather than paying someone to do it for me and charge me a ridiculous amount of money for something that takes 5 mins. and also i rent so i’m worried what my landlord would say if i tell him. i don’t want to have to get rid of my dog.
If your talking about the wires at the outdoor condensing unit, i think you have it right, but of course you never know how some numbnut might wire things up. My geuss would be Yellow(power) of condesor to Red and Black(common) of condensor to white.
A couple things to keep in mind. One is that the electricity for those wires comes from the furnace, so you want to shut the power off to the furnace before working with those wires, to be safe I’d suggest shutting off the power to the outdoor unit also while you work on it. Another thing is a possibility that when the wires were chewed they shorted. This would either blow a low voltage fuse in the furnace( if it has a fuse) or fry the transformer in the furnace. Just a heads up in case it doesn’t work after fixing the wires and turning power back on.
For future reference your t-stat designations are:
R=Power
Y=Cooling
W=Heating
G=fan
she chewed up the wires the first time and my brother connected them back together and i used chicken wire to block off the back of the outdoor condenser unit so she can’t get to them and that didn’t stop her. she chewed them up again and i tried wiring them back together myself and now nothing works. when i put the thermostat to fan, cool, or heat nothing comes on. theres a click at the thermostat like its switching on but nothing. theres a button on the outdoor condenser where the black and wires go into. i don’t know if its a tester or what but while your pushing it the fan to the condenser turns on. i thought i might of got the wires wrong so thats why i originally posted the question. i don’t know if its a blown fuse or the the thermostat. but what does it sound like to you?
You might want to Google for a service manual for the exact model of AC unit you’re looking at. The info is probably out there.
I’m not prepared to venture into this thread without more information.
I’d like to see some pictures of what exactly is going on here.
Pictures of where the wires are chewed up, where they come from, where they go, anything else that might be relevant.
When you say the wires go to the house, are they going right into the side of the house along with the copper tubing or are they coming from an electrical box bolted to the house?
If it’s the thin low voltage wires the follow the copper tubing, you may want lay them along the pipe insulation and wrap them with electrical tape so the dog can’t get at them again.
