So it’s likely that Dreamy SO is going to be getting a new macbook for Christmas this year. Looking around, I found that there are still last generation macbooks available and they are selling at the same price as the current generation macbooks from the Apple store. I’m confused what to do and I’m turning to you dopers for suggestion.
The last generation white macbook is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM and a 150 GB hard drive for $996 at best buy.
The current generation white macbook is a 2.1 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive for $999 at the Apple store.
Obviously the numbers steer towards the last generation macbook if for no other reason but to save three dollars. However, I’m confused.
Does the new generation have some under the hood improvements to warrant the extra cost over the last generation?
Is the apple tax being implemented here in the form of a slower processor/smaller memory?
Did I just happen to stumble on a decent sale price because they’re dumping old inventor and it’s a little early for xmas shopping?
To be clear, I’m talking about the plastic mac book, not the unibody aluminum one and I realize we’re talking about $3, When I say it’s a cost difference it’s because I’m getting less for the same money.
What would you do if you were me? (this is why it’s IMHO not GQ)
Get the machine from Best Buy.
Now.
Sounds like a pricing mistake to me - the 2.4GHz machine was the high-end MacBook. The current White MacBook is the same machine, but the entry-level version.
I’d go with the new (last gen) machine from Best Buy. Its the machine I have, and ISTR, cost me about that much the day before the new MacBooks were announced. I am so glad I got it when I did rather than waiting, because I’d have only been able to afford the basic model otherwise… And I suspect the $50 or so is worth the difference between a new and a refurbished model…
You might want to check out whether the new macbook also has the new Nvidia graphics chip (or card or whatever), it’s suposed to be a big improvement. Also i just got the new aluminium macbook and it’s very, very nice; go and have a look, I’d be surprised if you’d still be wanting a white one
Thanks everyone for your replies. I think the last generation one is going to be the one.
It must be that they’re cutting the price to get rid of the discontinued (although better) model. I’ve continued to research it and it looks like the new model doesn’t have the Nvidia graphics or the glass multi touch track pad. So I’m off to snatch one of the old models before they’re gone.
football if you can think of a way where I can get the aluminum one for me and gift the SO my old white plastic one without being a big heel, well then I’m all ears…
