White only prom

I know this because I attend high school and have gone to their dances. If you have a dance with mostly white people, you’re going to have very few requests for hip-hop. You attend a dance aimed at black kids, the chances of you hearing them play a country-western song are very slim. I figure, as long as they allow whoever want to go to the dance in, then there shouldn’t be a problem.
About having a white and black president, it doesn’t make any sense to me.

You’re kidding me, right?

I’ll have to post back to this thread when I’m not holding a squirmy 4 month old.

And how do you figure? Do you believe that all black people listen to rap and hip-hop, walk around in cargo pants and tank tops, and say things like “Bling-bling!” and “Sup dog?” all the time, despite where they live or their socio-economic standing?

That is several shades of fucked up. What is this, did Marty McFly accidently blow up the DeLorean in that town?

A black and a white class president. These people really don’t get it at ALL.

My dear sir, you’re clearly posting in the wrong thread. Please note the spot where it says “White only prom” in the thread title, and then please explain to me why this isn’t a problem.

For the record: I merged the two threads. I hope this doesn’t cause any confusion, but it keeps things nice and tidy here in the Pit.

There are many black people who listen to rock and pop, and DON’T like hip hop. Black people have diverse musical tastes. Methinks you’re talking out of your behind.

If it were just a matter of music and food, you could still invite everyone. It is rude excluding people just because of their color.

And what’s wrong with hiring a DJ that has a diverse musical collection? I went to a school that was half white, half black, and at the dances the DJs would play everything from R Kelly to Leonard Skynard. Why? Because they understood they were dealing with people with diverse musical tastes.

It was wonderful because everyone appreciated the diversity. I remember when the DJ put on “Sweet Home Alabama” all the white kids hooped and hollered and ran onto the dance floor. We black kids watched them for a few minutes and then we (or, at least some of us) joined them. No one died because we were shaking our asses to southern rock. Just like none of the white kids died while dancing to TLC.

You’re really bad with analogies, aren’t you? It would be apt if Spelman had separate events for their white and black students. Or, if black students segregated themselves from white students. But they do not, so please try again.

BTW, Taylor County is nowhere near Atlanta. The two places are as different as two places in the same state can get.

Please tell me you were horribly drunk when you wrote this, or are you really that fucking stupid?

Do you honestly believe that hip-hop has generated huge sales based entirely on selling to blacks, a minority who (IIRC) won’t even be the largest minority in America very soon?

I concur with the people who think that the above statement is the utmost silliness.

I teach dance, and both my black and white students love the diverse collection of dance music I have. It ranges from the Eagles to Quad City DJs.

Hip Hop and Techno tend to make better music for beginning dancers due to the nice solid beat.

On another note, I have to confess that at first glance at the title? I thought, “you’ve got to be kidding, White only? what’re they the fashion police”? I thought they meant that they were going to try to theme the clothing and decor white only.

Not because I’m ditzy (though occasionally that’s true), but because the first thing that crossed my mind was not race. Because I live up north? (WAY up north hehe), I don’t know, I just know that race wasn’t my gut reaction to the thread title.

I may have been out of line in assuming that few white people like hip-hop, but every single white friend I have dislikes that music, while every black friend abhorrs any other kind. I derived that conclusion from my own personal experiences.

Well, wherever it is.

Spelman, for whatever reason, decided to only offer courses (and presumably, functions) to black (female?) students, to the exclusion of other racial/gender groups.

These students decided to have a private party, for white students, excluding black (other races?) students.

If you are going to go ape-shit over white students having white-only events, I expect to see you go equally apeshit over black students have black-only events. To do otherwise would be blatant hypocrisy.

I personally think there is no problem here. People are free to congregate with whoever they want, for whatever reason they want.

First off, are you sure you aren’t confusing rap with hip hop? They’re two different types of music.

Also, didn’t someone else in this thread bring up the fact that if blacks are a minority, who is buying all the records and making all of the rap and hip hop stars so huge?

Third, I own a home very near to a teen hangout, when I was still living there (I rent it out now), most of the rude teens blasting the rap on their “bouncin” systems were WHITE kids. Like 10-30 cars each weekend night, and about half that on weeknights.

The rich ones from “up the hill” with the attitude of entitlement.

Have you considered that the white people you know have their taste in music NOT because they’re white, but because they’re your friends, and like tend to flock with like, and they have similar tastes to yours?

As to “all the black people you know abhor any other kind” ummmm how many black people do you know anyway? It’s not as if your friends are a large enough study group to prove your point.

When I was in highschool, I hardly went to any dances because I knew the music would be almost exclusively hip-hop and rap, and I don’t like either style of music. There were maybe ten black students in my entire school, and not a single one in my class. Most of my white friends are rap friends. Every single one of my black friends hate it. Of course, I only have one black friend. He’s a metalhead. Shows you the danger of extrapolating conclusions from small sample populations.

Fin-Man: Thanks for the insight into your “thought” processes. Please keep in mind that not everyone thinks like you, thank Christ.

Blackeyes: Fuck off.

Assuming your version of events is accurate, that’s far more offensive than this “whites only” prom bullshit. High school students, you expect to be stupid. College administrations… well, okay, you expect them to be stupid, too, but they should still know better.

Miller:

Spelman is a historically black college for women established in 1881. Those are the events he’s referring to.

Almost every single person in my dorm, white or black or Hispanic or Asian listens to hip-hop and rap. I’m black, and while I do like hip-hop and rap, I also like jazz (listening to Kind of Blue right now), some rock, R&B, techno, gospel, classical, bluegrass… just about everything except pop country. Does my personal experience trump yours?

Hopefully, the whites-only prom will end up being a small insignificant event with about 10 people, while the non-discriminatory prom will be the one everybody goes to.

Yep. Give this private prom party a hundred years or so, and we can call it a ‘Historic White Prom Party’. Then everyone will be happy.

Um, Brutus, HBCUs were established in the days when black people were barred from white colleges. Currently, AFAIK all of them comply with anti-discrimination laws (in fact, I don’t know if any of them ever voluntarily barred white people), and in fact a few are now majority-white.

Unless I’m missing something, the article never states that there is a white class president position, and a black class president position. Perhaps they are both co-presidents. That’s how my school does it. And, seeing how half about half the class is black and half is white, it doesn’t seem all that odd that they would have one white and one black president.

If you have to write “for whatever reason”, then you shouldn’t be bold enough to use Spelman as an example. Your ignorance shows.

To the exclusion of other students? Do you have evidence that Spelman discriminates against non-blacks or are you–as usual–talking out of your fanny cheeks.

And this would be wrong. Just like the case in the OP. Your point?

You haven’t provided any instances of black students having blacks-only events. When you do this, maybe people can go apeshit over that too.

And what is it called when people pull made-up, poorly thought through “examples” out of their ass for the sake of being argumentative? Blatant stupidity.
