Just an innocent little "Ghetto" party to celebrate MLK Day

It seems that some residents at Walton dorm at Texas A&M university were going to celebrate MLK day in their own way.
With a ghetto party.

I do give Texas A&M credit for taking preventive action. But what gets me is the at the end of the article,

"Greg Hodges, a 21-year-old white senior, said he did not find the party idea offensive as long as nothing “serious” happened.

“This was just meant to be done in good humor,” he said."

Well, I do not expect any lynchings, or any “popping caps.” Maybe “getting your freak on wit da bitches,” or showing your “bling-bling.” Nothing “serious” has to happen to be in bad taste, and just plain ignorant.

Texas A&M especially has a problem with its reputation in this area, and they wisely shut your candy-ass party down before you had a chance to further embarass them further.

Next time, have a pro wrestling" theme party or something.

:wally :wally :wally

I know, I should proofread. Just imagine me stuttering with indignation.

Haha… it’s funny because you chide the A&M students for basing a party on crude stereotypes, and then immediately imply that A&M students are ignorant rednecks that obsess over pro wrestling! Good one!

No. I think a pro wrestling party would be cool. I would certainly consider going. I’m no pc warden. Give me a bawdy, un-pc celebration over a stuffy cotilion any day.

But having a “ghetto” party is just dumb.

I never meant to imply that A&M students are ignorant rednecks.

A&M students are not ignorant. Many will go on to be well paid professional rednecks.

I’ve gone to a ghetto party. We drew our ghetto names out of a hat, and dressed as ghetto as we could think (I looked more barrio, by accident, but it was cool).

We made sure there were like 5 Kims in the womens name hat.

I was Calvin. We drank 1 40 each, because most of us don’t like beer, and BBQ and everything.

Loads of fun.

Some people are far to fucking sensitive.

Yeah, personally I think it sounds like a load of fun. Wear the baggiest jeans you can find, a mesh t-shirt and a bandanna, have a cap gun/air pistol in your belt… find some guy with a convertible and cruise the block. Awesome. And the rule is you have to tizzalk lizzike thizzis.

I’m trying to figure out where the school has the slightest bit of authority to stop an off-campus party. I guess since the students live in a dorm, the school can stick it’s nose into their business whenever it wants.

no really thinking the theme is a problem…more the fact that it was for MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY.
hello?
they can’t see the bad taste aspect there?

Hey, they were going to have a ghetto party. Redneck is as redneck does, my friend.

Hey Tristan how about next year you make up in blackface too,so the ensemble will be complete?

Just an idea.

If the party was off campus it is none of the University’s fucking business what the students do, in good taste or bad.

The university did not cancel the event. They asked what the fuck the idiots thought they were doing, and the idiots then shut it down themselves.

Also, the University is hardly Congress- even if they HAD directly shut down the party.

The First Amendment applies against all government entities, smoke. That includes state entities.

I am not trying to defend throwing a “Ghetto” party on MLK’s birthday as being a nice thing to do. Clearly it is not. I would like to know what was said in the conversation where “They asked what the fuck the idiots thought they were doing…” because it looks to me like there was a threat, either overt or implied, that having such a party would result in some action from the school. Without knowing more, of course, it is difficult to say, but there is at least the potential that the University is making a content based decision here, and I think the 1st Amendment probably protects this kind of activity.

Help, help! I’m being oppressed!

If the students think their free speech rights have been infringed, let 'em sue. Short of that, fuck 'em.

Do you think that is what King would have wanted?

I’m quite sure that Dr. King wouldn’t have wanted you to hijack somebody’s rant about a bunch of half-witted bigoted fucktards with a speculative discussion about the First Amendment.

I didn’t even see it the last time I looked.

Welcome aboard, Soilcreep. I am honored that your response to my OP was your first.

I know a dude who was nearly kicked out of Notre Dame because he was caught off campus with a stolen ND road sign. I’d say he was caught stealing the sign but they actually caught him as he was walking down the highway with the sign in hand. His claim is that he “found” it and decided to take it to his dorm. The ND PTB didn’t buy his story, however, and made him do a few hundred hours of community service in lieu of kicking him out of the joint. (Thank goodness it wasn’t a U of M sign…)

So apparently some schools, esp. private ones, do have rules about character and whatnot and reflecting positively on the school. (Anyone know if Texas A&M is private?)

So while technically they couldn’t stop the students from having the party, they could threaten to kick any attendees out of school based on character issues and creating a racist environment.
