Its just that minorities can get off easier with these kind of things.
Im sure the thought of a “White Entertainment Television” would just make black people think we are all racist.
EXACTLY! Now you’re getting it! When you’re a minority, your voice doesn’t get heard. You may be at the bad end of the bully stick, ala sulamith. That’s why no one jumped on her when she said they had a “white” prom.
When you aren’t in the minority, you don’t have to go outside of the mainstream to have something “special” because you ARE the mainstream!
And a WET would be racist, since you can turn on any of the major three networks and get plenty of WET already.
I think we’re finally making progress in this fighting ignorance thing.
[sup]EMPHASIS ADDED[/sup]
appletreats, are you even reading what Coldfire is typing?
Two class presidents only perpetuates exactly what racism is all about. Namely, segregation and division of the races. All of it sucks major (apple) green donkey nuts.
Bingo! It’s time for this world to become a little more colorblind. Until then, we’ll all be having a rough go of it.
So, let’s all give a whopping and rousing cheer for scumbag, self-aggrandizing asshats (oh, how I love the pit!) like Al Sharpton and Reginald Jackson for playing the race card so often that everyone can read the deck like a cardsharp.
Then I predict a rough go of it for, oh, about the next forever.
“De La Soul is here to stay…like racism!”
It’s lost ALL of its meaning, in my opinion. A person can’t state an opinion (or even a actual fact) that is contrary to the present popular thinking on race issues without being attacked with this label.
Example: there’s a certain bar in my town that has a jukebox, and the jukebox collection is more favorable to rock and country music than it is to jazz, hip-hop, or dance music.
A Trendy Liberal white person that I know claimed that this musical disparity was “racist” and was a deliberate attempt to keep black people out of the bar by denying them the chance to listen to music they want to hear.
With all of her esteemed insight, she failed to catch her own prejudical comment: the suggestion that black people listen to only hip-hop, jazz, or dance music and couldn’t possibly be interested in hearing some rock or country. (I know a young black guy who listens to nothing but 70’s progressive rock! How’s that for breaking stereotypes?) But that’s besides the point: the point is, that bar has the right to put whatever music they want in the jukebox, just like black-oriented clubs have the right to play nothing but hip-hop if they so prefer, with no concessions to us whiteys who want to hear Dave Matthews.
Regarding the issue of private parties…they could at least invite the token black guy for balance, like in Not Another Teen Movie.
Well, considering that racism (or un-colorblindedness) has existed since Day 1 and is prevalent in many forms, I don’t think even a hundred years of progressive thinking will completely erase it. There’s something very deep-rooted and primal about it, and I guess the idea of pre-judging people different from yourself and making general statements about their worth is a comfort for some types.
Have race issues improved? Undoubtedly.
Will humanity ever see a time when people don’t use words like *nigger, chink, cracker, spic? * Don’t bet the farm on it.
Not allowing them to attend? I don’t think there can or should be rules about who gets invited to private parties. Are you required to invite me (or any of the other 30,000 dopers) to your upcoming Memorial Day Picnic? No? Wouldn’t that be exclusionary on your part?
Gee, milroyj. Are you being dense on purpose?
We aren’t talking about individuals not being invited to a party. We’re talking about a group of people being banned from an otherwise “open” party just because they don’t look a certain way. It’s petty. It’s stupid.
It would be like me inviting ONLY the Dopers who have numbers in their usernames to my Memorial Day Picnic and announcing this “private” party on the MSIMS board for everyone to see. Even if you didn’t care about the picnic, wouldn’t it bother you that people could be so superficial and stupid?
I don’t think there should be rules either. But that doesn’t mean we can’t judge the rules and attribute values to them. IMHO, the rules of this particularly “private party” are ignorant and dumb. But I’m not calling for anyone to shut them down and arrest them because they haven’t broken any laws.
The whiny fucking sense of entitlement that I’m getting from some of the (presumably white) posters in this thread is making me fucking sick.
If you truly can’t see why somthing like this is racist, you can probably get away with blaming your upbringing. If not, you’re just a disingenuous assmunch.
Look, fucksticks: Even if the whites-only event had nothing to do with prom, it would be as racist as a fucking cross-burnin’ for the very fact that it’s whites-only. And if you don’t have a problem with that, what the fuck are you doing on this board, you ignorant slut?
I’m not saying the gubmint should somehow squash the Pigfucker Hoedown. I’m just saying that any kids who attends deserves every fucking ounce of scorn that they get until they repudiate the event.
For fuck’s sake, when I was seventeen, I knew that deliberately excluding people of other races from anything was despicable. Anybody who should know better yet continues to excuse it is beneath fucking contempt.
Wrong person in previous post.
So, Ogre, does this mean we’re supposed to give up the good fight, throw in the towel admit defeat in the battle against ignorance and all become honky cracker asshats?
Good shit, black455!
OK, I agree, the rules ARE petty, stupid, ignorant, and dumb. I also think it’s their perogative to have those stupid rules. And, before anyone’s head explodes, it’s equally your perogative to think those rules are stupid, and to call them out on it.
Anyway, I just thought that posters calling a bunch of high school kids “Fucking ass backward fucks” and “stupid” and “filth”, and insinuating about their “blatant hatred and racism” was just a little over the top.
The broad-brush stereotyping thing goes both ways, ya know?
If people don’t like the stereotypes ascribed to them, they shouldn’t go out of their way to fulfill and perpetuate them.
I’m sorry, but it’s hard for me NOT to judge these people as racist. I’m not judging them based on anything but their actions and the details provided in the OP.
What are you talking about, monstro? There are plenty of blacks who fit the black stereotype perfectly. Yet if I were to say they were acting sterotypically black, I’m sure you’d be one of the first to accuse me of racism.
milroyj, here’s a bright shiny nickel, now go buy yourself a damned clue. Didn’t you just called these students (or their rules, it’s the same bloody thing) “stupid” as well?
Either way, these kids are intensely stupid.
A) If they are unaware that their “whites only” ‘prom’ is blatantly racist, they are blindingly stupid.
B) If they are aware of how racist their “whites only” ‘prom’ is and still insist on having it (segregated). Then they are stupid to the point of being evil.
I’ll let you decide.
monstro was simply asserting that they are fitting (quite nicely, I might add) into the mold of stereotypical racists, not stereotypical white people.
Are you seriously this much of an obtuse ass or do you just play one on message boards?
What you are saying is indefensible, IMHO. What if I said that a group of Blacks were lazy, stupid, crack-addicted, welfare queens, because of the way some of them fulfill and perpetuate those stereotypes? [N.B. I don’t believe any of those things] Wouldn’t that be ignorant?
On the other hand, all of the white students of Taylor highschool are not racist. All of the white students who attend the white prom are not racist. All of the white people in Taylor county are not racist.
But you assume the contrary. Pot=Kettle, if you ask me.
You may not like it - tiz your right, but it is their right to do it - after all this is the USA isn’t it?
BTW why all the hub-bub about the white prom? why not more hub-bub about the black prom?
</.>
Read the fucking article.
<//.>
There isn’t a “black prom.” It’s open to everybody. Problem is, the yokels in question can’t grasp the difference.
