White or wheat?

My choice of bread is probably the least objectionable facet of my tastes. I’d feel bad for those assigned to watch me – oh, the horror they’d feel!

While I’ll choose Wonder bread over wheat, I don’t really like it. My store-bought bread of choice is Pepperidge Farm Hearty White, but I don’t find it appealing enough to just munch on a couple slices. Some of the best bread I’ve had includes the rolls from The Black-Eyed Pea (my wife brought home a couple dozen from her last trip to Houston–score!) and the Italian bread at this nice little restaurant in Honolulu called Auntie Pasta’s. Of course, they’re not normally available to me, which leads me to ask:

Seeing as how you’re also in IN, what brand do you like (hopefully available at Meijer’s or Times, if they’re in your area)? Thus far, no one has mentioned particular brands except for Brownberry Farms, which I’m pretty sure I’ve tried. It would make my wife happy to try some others, so bring on the reccomendations. I should note that she doesn’t like bread with “chunks” of stuff like actual oats, as they irritate her bowels. And it’s the bits, not the fiber content – she drinks Metamucil regularly.

I’m a white bread kinda’ guy. Taste that sweet, sweet homogeneity and dependable texture.

Sara Lee heart healthy plus bread is pretty good. I have tried most of the Aunt Millie high fiber breads as well as brownberry, a few lite breads (which are lower in calories and higher in fiber) and a few others and I didn’t like any of them except the sara lee breads. Plus they have 5g fiber per slice.

Kroger and Walmart are the only grocers I know of that carry Sara lee heart healthy plus bread. Meijer and Marsh do not have it (what is Times exactly?). This kind of bread doesn’t have large chunks in it, and all in all its pretty good tasting.

Ah – we used to get the Sara Lee white until they stopped stocking it. I’ll have to try their wheat if I can find a store nearby that carries it. Times is another supermarket; I wasn’t sure if it was exclusively local or not. We generally shop at Meijer, although occasionally go to Target or Wal-Mart. I know there’s a Kroger around somewhere; perhaps I’ll check that out also.

Thanks!

Rye

Roman Meal whenever possible. I am also a big sourdough lover. Once in a while my MiL gets that Milton’s stuff, and it’s pretty good. White bread if there’s no other choice. There are few things in life more satisfying to me than a good multigrain bread, toasted and slathered with butter. Nummy! And anything with tons of sunflower seeds in it.

Uh, may I take ‘bread’, please? I buy cheap white for grilled cheese and because Mr. Lissar doesn’t like bought whole wheat bread. When I make it I usually do a half-and-half whole wheat/white mix, with cornmeal or oatflour added. When I buy good bread I get baguettes, ciabatta, brioche, or Italian. Good white bread.

I like rye and different dark breads, but it’s not worth it unless we’re having other people over. I just really like bread. I would never actually eat cheap white on its own. It’s just there for grilled cheese.

Both. I like all kinds of bread. I am lucky to work just blocks from the OroWheat thrift shop, which has a whole wall of different types of bread at half price. It has Entemann’s too. I prefer wheat, actually, but since most of my family doesn’t I get interesting varieties of white. Challah is good, as is rye and pumpernickel and sourdough.

And speaking of bread, remember the scene in Hannah and her Sisters where Woody Allen, who has decided to convert to Catholicism, unpacks a bag with a
Bible, a crucifix, rosary beads, and a loaf of Wonder Bread and a jar of mayonnaise?
