Stabbing somebody for punching and grabbing you is horrifically disproportionate and inexcusable. I’m glad to see that so many people are condemning this murderous escalation of the original (itself unjustified) assault.
I hope they’re all agreed that it would likewise be inexcusable for a white guy to fatally injure a black guy for punching and grabbing him during a public altercation about who’s allowed to be sitting where in a sports arena.

I’m not saying we should all go out and lynch people, but I am saying if we threaten to lynch people, at least, make it a credible threat, not a complete joke.

I’m thinking that the stabber was a budding serial killer, or mass shooter, who got caught the first time by doing it in a very public place.
I’m been threatened with stabbing on two occasions (OK, I do live in #12 on Wikipedia’s list of murder rates/city) but both times escaped unscathed.
First guy got away, second got arrested, but I dropped charges. (He was desperate, and stupid. But not a murderer, in my biased opinion, just a man who had run out of choices. I did not feel it was worth my while to make him suffer even more)
I do know how to box, done some bare-knuckle boxing (also gloves) which brings reality to the idea of fighting real soon: it’s shit, sore and over very fast.

As far as I can tell from the information quoted from the arrest affidavit, this particular violent crime seems to have grown out of an altercation between two hot-tempered adolescents, in which one of them repeatedly physically assaulted the other because he didn’t like where he was sitting. And the assaulted teen then responded with horrifically disproportionate and excessive armed violence.
That’s not the type of behavior that says to me “serial killer” or “mass shooter”, where a perpetrator cold-bloodedly plans a deliberate slaughter of a bunch of oblivious people just going about their own business. That says to me some West Side Story-style modern dueling bullshit, where a couple of pissed-off teens are physically fighting for no valid reason what-so-fucking-ever until one of them suddenly makes it murder.
What I (we?) don’t know is how much the rest of the crowd of the one school was either egging on, or getting ready to physically join in, the fight.
If I’m getting hassled by some dude, and it looks like he’s got a few friends, and it looks like I’m trapped / surrounded, for damned sure I’m gonna escalate the force level. Because that’s the only way I’m getting out un-crippled or un-dead.
ISTM the kid with the knife is both the winner of, and the innocent victim of, the larger scenario.
There is nothing “horrifically disproportionate” about using potentially lethal force to defend yourself from what’s turning into a group attack. “Bare minimum” is more like it.
Was everybody a stupid hot-headed teen? Sure they were. But hot-headed teens can kill you just as dead as can middle-aged career criminals or basic barroom bullies.
This is a damned shame overall. Better it never happened.

I don’t know how you feel trapped when people are trying to make you leave. That seems like the polar opposite of being trapped.
I can quite easily imagine a feeling of entrapment in such a situation if I’m feeling threatened by the person asking me to leave and my “fight or flight” instinct kicks in. Really, use your imagination. I don’t think it’s that difficult to find a scenario that works. But we don’t know the full details, so I can’t say whether that is or is not what happened. We don’t know. I’d be curious to hear the full account when it comes up in court. Now, I’m not saying it makes it justifiable, but it may make it understandble to me.
