Whitey Bulger: On the lam for 12 years!

Well, today marks the 12th anniversay of WB disappearing. the Boston mobster (who is implicated in at least 13 murders), and wanted on additional charges, left his Quincy, MA condo, 12 years ago, and headed for parts unknown. Rumor is that he had at least $3 million in cash, stashed in bank safe deposit boxes around the country. The FBI seems to have no clue about his whereabouts-they haven’t tapped his bother’s phone.
How long before the FBI gives up on finding fugitives? And, is there any evidence that corrupt FBI officials are hiding evidence on this guy? I would expect that if caught, WB would have a LOT to say about his dealings with corrupt FBI agents!

There’s no statute of limitations on murder, so he’d just be stuck in a cold case file somewhere 'til new evidence turns up.

On a slightly related note, “Whitey Bulger” sounds like a handy euphemism.

Sounds interesting. Can we get a link on this or did you just happen to remember the anniversary of this guy disappearing and post this?

I’m interested in reading more about the details of this if you have them.

We already know what went on between Whitey and his FBI handlers. At least one of the agents involved, John Connolly, is in prison for obstruction of justice. Read “Black Mass” for all of the details.

They can’t find Whitey because the world is a very big place and Whitey is fairly non-descript. If he is living off cash, as is thought, there’s not much of a trail to follow as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid.

Bulgar’s name pops up every few years. His brother was a Mass. politician and is now a university president. Authorities believe that the bros. have had contact over the years, but the straight bro. always denies it. Here’s the Wiki entry:

Like post under his own name on a message board?

Thanks for the link. I found this part interesting.

I think it’s interesting when people create their own moral code. I wonder if it was internally consistent.

My father was good friends with Roger Wheeler, the Tulsa businessman who Whitey had killed back in '81. My dad told Roger that getting mixed up in Jai Alai was a bad idea, but he didn’t listen … .

He: Check out the whitey bulger!
She: It’s missing!

This story has long interested me. I met his brother Billy, who at the time was president of the Mass. Senate IIRC, while I was in college in the mid-'80s. He came to my college and talked about the practical side of the legislative process. He struck me as a very canny and unsentimental guy. We were all too polite to ask him about his brother, I’m afraid.

Nitpick alert: He was the president. He has since stepped down/was pushed out by the Romney administration. But that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to leech off the Massachusetts taxpayers.

Hey c’mon, if Jai Alai was a cause of death, the Basque independentists wouldn’t need to bother with bombs! Half of the north of Spain and south of France would be depopulated by now.

But you can’t be Whitey Bulger because…

stands up, puffs out chest

I am Whitey Bulger!

Note to FBI and others concerned: just kidding!

Whitey Bulger…sounds like a good name for a small chain of hamburger stands. Say, a White Castle rip-off? With those little “slider” burgers?

Seriously, it’s only been 12 years? 1995? I’d swear that Whitey has been on the lam since, like, the early 80s.

I find Bulger to be of interest, because if found 9and he talks), most of what he would say would be highly embarrassing to the FBI. basically, the Bulger gang ran drugs into Boston, and caused the deaths of hundreds of people (don’t even count the ruined lives). they did all of this with the FULL KNOWLEDGE of the Boston FBI office. John Connolly (the disgraced former FBI agent , now on trial in Florida), told Whitey all about upcoming police raids, and assisted in several murders).
As for his brother (former senate president and UMASS president0, he has NEVER acknowledged his role in protecting the gang-he made several telephone calls from the house next door-presumably to Whitey. Besides being corrupt politician, William Bulger is an extraordinarily venal and nasty person-he neither forgives or forgets.
