Whither VOLVO?

FORD have announed that they intend to sell the car division of VOLVO. God knows what they apid, but I doubt they will get their money back. Who would pick up Volvo? They make prett good cars, but are a smallish manufacturer, in a small market. Plus, Sweden has to be a pretty high cost country to be making cars in. So, what would happen to them, if no buyer is found?
How does Sweden (population about 9.5 millon) support two car manufacturers anyway?

To my understanding, Volvos have not been manufactured in Sweden since 1996. This only jumps to mind because we own a '96 Volvo wagon, and I recall reading that it was the last model year manufactured there.

But Volvo has a very solid customer loyalty base; once you own a Volvo, you tend to stick with them. Safety features are stellar, performance is excellent, and to me, it’s pretty obvious that aesthetic design is not a big expense, as the body design has barely changed in the last few decades!

I doubt that the other two of the American Big 3 automakers could manage it, but I’m sure there’s some other automaker, maybe one of the Japanese ones, who would love to acquire Volvo.
