I’ve never been in the state of California for more than three days at a stretch, and I wasn’t even born when Jerry Brown was first elected governor. Which doesn’t change the fact that you keep railing against him with no more justification than “But he’s a stinky-poo!”. Really, if he was as horrible as you say, it should be no problem at all for you to give some examples of just what was so horrible about him.
Well, the Big Oil companies are trying to put it as the environment vs jobs, but the numbers seem to show there’s more jobs in the environment that any that might be lost in refineries. 23 is bogus.
However, prop 24 is a real tough one, I am with you there. Some of those business tax cuts were pure pork, others look like they will bring jobs and build up valuable industries.
In fact, if I dont make up my mind for sure, I’ll reset to my default NO vote, as on all Props where I can;t make up my mind. Same with 22 & 27.
Let me know what you decide, but of course, I’ll vote by mail soonish.
The death penalty being wrong always and everywhere is a damned GOOD reason to subvert the will of people who will insist on continuing to mistakenly believe the contrary.
I live in California (since 2007). I already voted by mail.
I voted for every single Green Party candidate. That did not include Ms Whitman or Mr. Brown, though if I had a gun to my head I would vote for Brown. I don’t want a business geek at the helm.
In the few places where there was no Green Party candidate, I wrote in my friends. For all the judges I voted NO. For the propositions, I consulted a smart, informed friend and simply voted the way she recommended.
Did I waste my vote? No more than you will no matter who you vote for.
I vote Green so I can tell people I did so after the election, when the real work begins.
A lascivious thing is a Green
Every tree, every shrub, every bean
Every beast classed “Endangered”
And life-forms far stranger
Must endure his attentions obscene!
Voting for the Greens is not a wasted vote. It is a statement that you, the individual voter, would prefer that the Green candidate win. You get a vote and you’ve used it. The fact that you are virtually guaranteed to be in the minority is not the same thing as “wasting” it.
Writing in random friends’ names is, however, unless you genuinely consider them viable candidates. Otherwise you’re basically just spoiling your ballot to absolve yourself of the mess that is to come. You might as well have stayed home. It’s not something to be proud of.
Can we really trust Whitman, who eats a chili dog by cutting it into pieceswith a plastic knife, then daintily consuming it with extended pinky? How does that play with the “drink a beer with the candidate” crowd?
In fairness, they are still within the socially accepted mourning period- so, it’s not like we can blame them. Bakersfield businesses still shut down each day at 2, so we can have a moment of silence.
You know what meme I hate in politics. the one about how great it would be if the government was run more like a business and therefore someone who ran a business would be a good Governor or whatever.
Its a total crock, governemnt is not a business, cannot be run like a business and should not be run like a busoiness.
Jerry is running a new commercial where he captures Meg stating exactly that. It’s shows Arnold S. making a statement then Meg making an almost verbatim statement, including running the state like a business. It’s the best ad of the campaign to date.
Cite? I can’t find anything on the web about this. I think maybe you don’t understand what MD means. I’ve never heard of Jerry Brown (or anyone else for that matter) saying chiropractors should be “made” medical doctors. Now if you are saying he somehow tried to legitimize chiropractors somehow, maybe, but even so, I say, “cite”? Because Google is failing me here.
Which laws (your plural) that he supported (he supported how?) “ran off” these industries (and all the ones you list have strong presence in California to this day)?
Oh yes, let’s not paint with too broad a brush here. Apparently I live off entitlements. If you saw my CA tax bill I don’t think you’d feel that way. I care about a lot of things that are wrong with CA’s government, but I’m eminently confident that Meg Whitman has zero chance of improving any of the things I care about.
Her advertising might be “poor”, but I’d say it accurately reflects her values: winning at any cost, lacking in scruples, using money and influence to get what she wants, and cynically pandering. She’s been “stepping it up” as much as she’s capable of; it’s difficult to come across as wanting to do something for California when in your heart of hearts, you really only care about doing for yourself.
Many voters like this; look at the tea party. But I don’t think your second sentence necessarily flows from the first, logically. In fact I think they’re distinct arguments. I’m not sure I disagree with either one, per se, but not sure how it’s relevant to the current batch of propositioning, except perhaps against Meg.
In recent speeches Whitman has repeatedly said that how great California was and how anything was possible in such a great state when she first came here, 30 years ago in 1980.
Who was governor 30 years ago in 1980?.. Jerry Brown.
Brown is now running a commercial using video of her making the quote.
I don’t know about that first one… Is Arnold really unpopular enough that comparing one’s opponent to him is a winning tactic? The second one, though, is pure genius. It’s not just not an attack ad, it’s not just saying what good Brown can do, it’s his own opponent praising him. Whitman’s advisors are probably kicking themselves right now for letting her say that.
