Whitman against Brown in California

Eh, your post comments didn’t mention it, your first link was in reference to the Arnie statements, and I assumed the second one was another Arnie commercial.

My post was the first to comment on the Whitman quote ad. Had you referenced the link with a comment, I wouldn’t have made my post.

It’s not that Arnold is unpopular, it’s that he might as well not have been in office for all the good he has done. After 2 terms he has accomplished almost nothing at all exactly because of the things that are quoted in that ad. The things he has tried to do have actually be sort of ok, but his inability to do anything with the state government has caused his governorship to be a failure. California is swiftly turning into Michigan, is a frightening time to live here, and that is what that ad attacks. The thing we can afford least right now is 4 more years of the same.

So is there any serious talk of, say, a state constitutional convention? Is the structure of the government so fucked up that no body has the power to achieve anything?

No, there’s a Prop 25 that when passed, will allow a budget to be passed with a simple majority. It will fix much.

Jerry proves once again that he’s about a million times the politician and has about ten million times the brain power of Whitman–in this clip he just pwns her so handily it’s like watching Miyagi vs a white belt six year old. And in front of a Women’s Conference too. Tsk, tsk, she’s quite the empty lavendar suit, isn’t she? I bet old Pete Wilson, who’s running her campaign, is quite disappointed in her.

I agree Brown won that, I love Jerry Brown. But to be fair it was a bit of a gotcha, especially since Meg is down by double digits in the latest polls. She can’t agree to a softening and slow jog to the finish line, so I completely understand why she wouldn’t agree to it. Of course, Brown’s birlliance is he knew that and he pushed hard on it, came off as being very fair and accomodating to the electorate. Meg was trapped and Brown pounced.

Yes, I agree Brown came off better.

But, generally speaking, the whole “negative ads” thing is a crock, and I’m disappointed that Lauer approached the issue in such a shallow manner. There’s no reason why negative ads should be stigmatized. Misleading, unfair, or dishonest ads are a different issue.

I don’t know, I could maybe argue that Brown got the better of that exchange, but it was far from a pwning. Whitman has a good point, there, that it’s perfectly legitimate to attack the policies of one’s opponent. But mostly, what I got from that clip was that the audience was way too enthusiastic: They just couldn’t seem to stop themselves from cheering every word that anyone said. There was more audience reaction in that clip than there was of any of the speakers (the moderator, the candidates, or the Governator) talking.

It did seem that Meg got flustered pretty easily. However, it amounts to nothing much, Meg was going to lose before this and she is still going to lose.

The Field poll out today has Brown ahead by 10 points. Previous ones had them roughly tied. The turning point was housekeepergate. (She’s down 30 points among Latinos.)

One of the best illustrations of Karma in politics I can recall.
