Who are the inspectors dismantling the chemical arms in Syria?

They’ve really started dismantling and destroying the Assad’s chemical weapons, and it got me thinking about the people who are doing that.

Presumably they are with the UN? But if they are, they’re not military? They need to go into areas where there is still fighting, it’s not like when they did the same in Iraq. There is a huge civil war going on there.

So who are they? What’s their day job? They must be pretty trained/educated, and then maybe have some experience in conflict situations, in some way.

And do they have subdivisions, like the sarin experts and the munitions experts? And then they must have people protecting them?

The way I imagine it they are all James Bond. All of them. How many are there, anyway?

(I realise these are a lot of questions. I just want to know who these people are, any information is appreciated!)

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is based in The Hague. The team, I imagine, is mostly Dutch.

Thanks Nametag!

So it’s the technical secretariat that are the actual people who go out there. I’m not sure they would all be Dutch, the director-generals have so far been Brazilian, Argentinian and Turkish. (Hilariously, the first, Brazilian D-G was forced out after some sort of financial shenanigans, after which they instated an Argentinian just to show 'im!)

Now I’m picturing them less as James Bond and more like typical engineers: blue suit, hardhat and tie tucked back into the shirt.

I wonder what backgrounds they would have? How many? Just… who are they?

No idea about the team itself, but they are sending some of the weapons to Norway to be destroyed: first link in English I could find here.

Brilliant! Just as I’m wondering about who they are, they get the Nobel prize!

So then there is some interest, and we can find out more about who they are. I found this short video that gives a little more insight.

Just posting in case anyone else was interested!
