We’d better not leave out Mike Johanns. This is the guy who introduced the legislation to cut funding for Acorn. Also, he’s the biggest player AFAIK in directing federal subsidies to Nebraska to fuel corn ethanol, which is, if you do the math, just about the most retarded waste of resources ever to hit the scene in this county- not counting the Iraq War of course. He did it by joining W in his stupid government-sanctioned March for Jesus campaign, which I believe got him into his position as Secretary of Agriculture, where he was entrusted with the task of discrediting the idea of alternatives to petroleum by promoting corn ethanol- in exchange for billions of $ for his worthless state.
I am This Close to pitting this motherfucker, just as soon as I get my rant straight.
But Michelle Bachmann doesn’t count? She’s well-known to politics-followers as someone who says some crazy shit, but she’s nowhere near Sarah Palin famous. She’s not even John Bolton/Paul Wolfowitz Bush administration B-list famous.
WorldNewsDaily aka Weird Nut Daily is fairly whacko.
What about that ten year old that gave the speech at the conservative convention earlier this year? We could pit him maybe?
Well the criteria is basically the audience that we are catering to here. The entire point is to get people to talk about folks that we don’t focus on, on a daily basis. I am kind of baffled that this is such an out of the box idea to people.
There are daily threads on Michelle Bachmann. So try a little, go do some research, find out who are the behind the scenes people.
Find out the name of that kid if you want to bring him up. I don’t recall his name though I think he was 13. We can debate how influential he is.
Emphasis added. “The” definition? Presenting your preferred definition of a category as “the” definition of it is a paradigmatic No-True-Scotsman maneuver.
Since when has “conservatism” been about “conserving” anything? Conservatism is about conserving things about as much as a People’s Republic is about the people. And hostility to the Constitution - except the Second Amendment - is a hallmark of conservatives.
On the contrary, while many may strongly disagree with conservatives’ interpretation of the Constitution, they invariably express strong allegiance to it. Characters such as North openly disavow it, and are therefore about as conservative as the American Nazi Party.
And just to head you off on that one, the American Nazi Party is as conservative as the Communist Party of the USA is liberal.
You do have a point insofar as conservative is a far more nebulous category than Scotsman. However, “the” definition which I referred to simply is the somewhat inadequate dictionary definition of conservative. If you’d care to give a different definition and explain how it includes North, feel free.
You mean The Fellowship, a/k/a The Family? Odd group, that. Their interpretation of Christianity is power-worship: Whoever rules is manifestly chosen by God. (Wonder if they apply that to Obama . . .) Journalist Jeff Sharlet put out a book about them this year.
Judging by the rate of things these days I’m surprised they haven’t decided he has the wisdom and experience to take Michael Steele’s job --hiyooo

That book is a couple years old at this point. When I clicked that link it told me I ordered it May 2008.
The idea that the people in power are manifestly chosen by God is not an uncommon providential viewpoint. Well, it’s a not uncommonly discussed point of theology, but not necessarily widely held by people, particularly since many people subscribe to the ‘fallen world’ view and see the Government as being at worst run by the actual devil, and at best a necessary evil. This is probably a reason why religious conservatism and the belief that the Government can do no right so often go hand in hand. In that sense the Family’s view on it is uncommon in America.
Are we including those who don’t actually run for office, but fund the Forces of Darkness from behind the scenes and would turn the redwoods into pulp if there was a buck in it?
The Koch Brothers, Darth Charles and Darth David. Runner up, Richard Mellon Scaife, but its a little like comparing typhoid to cholera.
