I got an advert for a Discover card in the mail today and it had a fake card in there with the possibly fake name of J L Webb on it.
“Yes, it’s a fake,” says you. (A pseudonym, if you will.)
But I got a similar advert from Amex a few days ago with the name L A Webb on it. Now, I haven’t received anything from Mastercard or Visa this week so I’m not able to check their fake names but you have to admit the coincedence.
Is there some famous Webb or is this just another of those “things they do” like watches, where every picture has the watch set to 10:10 because it “looks happy?”
That’s interesting. I haven’t paid attention lately, but has American Express changed the name on their advertisements? For the longest time, though, Amex used the name C.F. Frost on their mock cards – who, incidentally, turns out to be a real person.
Perhaps this is a subject suitable for The Master as well.
This was on the Amex Blue card, which is a new card AFAIK so I’m not sure what’s on regular Amex cards. Anyone?
Ah, the Blue Card. As a total wild guess, since Blue was introduced as Amex’s smart and Internet-aware (whatever that means) card, perhaps the Webb surname is a pun on “world wide web?” Don’t know what the initials stand for, though. As an aside, I actually used to work with someone whose initialed name is W.W. Webb.
A little Googling dug up this nugget – some people actually think it belongs to new wave musician Gary Numan (read the first and last posts), heh.
Yeah, we aren’t any closer to a real answer…
J L Webb has been the fictitious name used on credit cards in ads for as long as I can remember -way before the www. It’s like the 555 of names. Interesting question, and very apt, given the op’s username.
Anyone else wanna take a shot?
