Who can Trump fire week 1?

As a retired federal employee, there are legal safeguards protecting civil servants from political firings. I think Trump has indicated he wants to repeal those laws and fire the alleged “deep state” type fed employees.

Giving the Republican controlled Congress the benefit of the doubt (which I admit is not hopeful) that they do not approve any changes to these protections. Who can he fire right away?

He has already fired one FBI director. Is the current one in danger if not obedient? I’m sure he wanted to fire Fauci et al. But somewhere in the chain of command of Fauci’s bosses, someone said “well we can’t really just fire hime”.

Political appointees usually gracefully resign every change of Administration and new appointees take over. I think that is standard operating procedure for most transitions.

But a GS-13 Intelligence Analyst won’t change their assessment of the Ukraine situation, or an Analyst in the NOAA won’t change their assessment of global warming, what would it take to fire them? Other than congress repealing various protections against political interference in the civil service?

And besides the FBI Director, who can be legally fired, what other high profile positions are at risk. The Fed Chairman has publicly stated the POTUS has no legal authority to fire him.

This all assumes the Maga Controlled Congress doesn’t give him legally authority to do whatever.

Welcome goodkitty (from a fellow retired fed)!

Here’s a 2016 link discussing firing of military members:

Can Presidents ‘fire’ senior military officers? Generally, yes…but it’s complicated

What I get from this link is that Trump, once again the president, can legally relieve three and four star general officers of their duties, as with Truman and McArthur. Trump probably cannot stop them from staying on at two star rank, but it is doubtful they would want to, and their hanging on would do nothing to stop Trump from playing the dictator.

By “their hanging”, are you talking about execution by hanging, or “hanging around”? (I really hope the latter.)

The latter! I corrected my post simultaneously with when you posted!

LOL, fair enough!

It’s called Schedule F.

OPM has already blunted upcoming Schedule F by issuing roadblocks, err landmines, err guidance on this: RELEASE: OPM Issues Final Rule to Reinforce and Clarify Protections for Nonpartisan Career Civil Service

The working theory in the active federal sector is to remove up to a third of the federal workforce by the end of 2025. Of course, contractors will remain.

I keep getting excited by this thread as I always misread the title as “who can fire trump?”

Preferably out of a cannon, through the offshore windmills and to the sharks.
