Who cares about CEO approval rating?

I’m feeling disgruntled at work, so was reading some internet articles about crappy places to work. I found this: The Worst Companies to Work For – Page 2 – 24/7 Wall St. which lists CEO approval rating, presumably by the employees. I know Glassdoor does that too. I think whether you like your job or not, what you think of the CEO is a separate matter. Like in my company, our CEO is pretty good, but the two levels of management below him are a problem and are causing friction for all the workers below. The statistic they really should be tracking is management-as-a-group approval. Right?

If the two levels below your CEO suck then your CEO also sucks!

QFT!

The approval rating shouldn’t be whether they’re a nice; are they polite; do they listen to me if I happen to talk to him; etc. It should be based upon what type of leader they are. Are they effective managers, setting the tone at the top, picking and hiring leaders beneath them; etc.

I guess I’ve worked in companies where the CEO is very distanced from the average joe worker. Whatever the CEO did wasn’t apparent to me, so I had no idea if he was going a good job or not. I think it may be different depending on the company size, though. If you have 50 people in your company then yes, everybody can easily see if the CEO is effective. But a bottom level workerbee at Proctor&Gamble? Not likely.
