Who currently gets the royalties from Band Aid, etc...

It’s Christmas time, there’s no need to be afraid…

I hear that song constantly on the radio this time of year. The proceeds from Band Aid’s Do They Know Its Christmas were destined for Ethiopia’s drought-stricken people. I understand that they raised a fair amount of money, and gave rise to a few similar songs/fundraisers in other countries.

But this was back in the 1980’s. Twenty years later, I assume someone still owns the rights to the songs and profits from their play. So, who gets the money now?

THis is not a definitive answer, but…

I heard this asked a few years ago on a British radio show and the answer that Bob Geldof gave was that there is a Band Aid trust that receives the money and the trustees then decide how to parcel it out.

It still goes to organisations like Oxfam, CAFOD, Save the Children etc.

Probably worth a few bob each year judging by how often I hear it.

Does the same thing happen with the yank effort?

The charity set up by Bob Geldorf (sp?) still exists and is active. There’s a telethon on British TV every two years called Comic Relief where the UK’s top comedians raise money for Africa, (and other causes, including helping the UK’s homeless. ) The money from the record goes to this.

Moved to CS.
