Based on a cursory internet search, I’ve seen references to Roger Bacon but I’ve seen one site that mentions a somewhat concurrent development by Arabs.
As an aside, can anyone recommend a good book that outlines scientific developments among different cultures through history?
I googled it and the best I came up with was a book on Amazon that claims it was the people found in Genesis that developed it. [sup]Which is not the answer![/sup]
Seriously though, what advancements are you interested in learning about? “Science” in general is just a wee bit vague, and includes pretty much everything humanity has ever learned. You can go all the way back to the development of agriculture in the Fertile Crescent if you want.
Actually, a very good overview of the history of science is the BBC documentary series “Connections.”
Well, specifically the origins of the scientific method. My internet search revealed that Bacon wrote about the need to hypothesize, test, etc. I was wondering if anyone knew offhand whether or not any Arab group had similar ideas.
Regarding advancements… A general world history book that emphasizes a general comparative cultural knowledge of metallurgy, astronomy, and science. Agriculture would no doubt be included in such a book but my focus is on the science.
