I was reading a thread on reddit where someone mentioned that the last execution that occurred in the tiny republic of San Marino occurred in 1468 (They finally abolished the death penalty in 1865).
There are plenty of cites (DOC) for this date, but none for the person that did it or the crime committed. . This story (in Italian), claims it was for murder, although it also claims the penalty was enacted in 1677, but doesn’t tell us whodunnit.
Now I’m curious - who was this guy, who did he kill (if it was in fact for murder), and what did people think about it at the time?
Strange that there are two different dates out there, and neither with a lot of detail. The Italian-language Wikipedia article on capital punishment in San Marino says, without citing a source as far as I can tell, that their last use of capital punishment was in “1677 for murder, or perhaps 1468 according to other sources.” It also mentions beheading as the method, while the English-language Wikipedia page mentions hanging.
I don’t speak Italian, I’m piecing that translation together through a combination of Google Translate and my working knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese. I get the feeling that any good cites out there on the Internet are probably going to be in Italian.
