Who did the best drug music?

Pinkfloyd - Umma Gumma, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Mothers of Invention - Uncle Meat, Absolutely Free, We’re Only In It for the Money

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Jethro Tull - Benefit

All I.M.H.O., of course

the Velvet-fucking-Underground

Doors (Mr Mojo Risin’… duh)
Jimmy Page (smack)
Eric Clapton (smack) (all of Cream for that matter…)

also Spacemen 3

When I was a kid, we used to trip out to Uriah Heep’s “Magicians Birthday” Queen’s “Prophet Song”, Zappa, lot’s, lots of Zappa, Flipper, Einstürzende Neubauten, Skinny Puppy, Foetus, Christian Death, and yeah, Butthole Surfers. 'Specially Rembrant Pussyhorse, Psychic Powerless, and Locust Abortion Technician

Nothing beats Hawkwind as a soundtrack for being on just about any kind of drugs.

Oh, The Birthday Party and The Cramps were always on our acid playlist as well.

Rufus Xavier
Wow - a Spirit fan ??
Great to listen to whether “drugged” or not.
I vote for Spirit as the most overlooked rock group of all time.
Okay, sorry for the hijack.

Except possibly:

Chrome
Psychic TV
The Damo Suzuki Network
Acid Mothers Temple

I don’t do drugs stronger than alcohol or caffeine, but I’ve had some very weird experiences while listening to the latter two–I was stone cold sober, but was definitely “elsewhere” and could barely stagger along without holding onto the walls. (This is why I don’t do drugs–my own brain chemistry is quite enough, thankyouverymuch.)

But my strongest tripping experience was while listening to some obscure Siberian shamanic music–again, while sober. To this day, I’m too scared to play that particular track on the CD again.

Jesus Nitro…you’ve got gooood taste.

The only music I could listen to tripping was Bach. Everything else sounds too trite.

All the stuff nitro mentioned + VU, Sonic Youth, TISM … pot and alcohol.
Only use alcohol these days…dont listen to much Bach.

Godspeed You Black Emperor

Never have done drugs but if I did- old Moody Blues (nothing done since 1970), America, Seals & Crofts- keep it mellow would be my rule!

This came up the other night as a friend & I were watching THE LAST UNICORN & we were laughing about the drugginess of the America soundtrack.

Nope - those suggesting **Hawkwind ** nailed it. Accept no substitute when off your head. Specifically **Space Ritual ** era Hawkwind - not the later NWOBHM (new-wave-of-British-heavy-metal) influenced crap…

I was there - Glastonbury 1984 - ahhh…

Speed: Iggy Pop sp. Lust for Life (the whole album)
Acid: Bach like antechinus and Frank Zappa instrumental stuff
Ecstacy: Almost anything, lordy even dance music sounded good. Why would anyone listen to that stuff if not on one? I remember listening to Steely Dan on headphones and it was wild. It felt like I could reach out and touch each musical part as if it were solid.
Dope: No thanks, never my cup of tea, as it were.

Gawd this makes me look like junkie! Honesty I haven’t touched this stuff in years, I’m not indestructible any more.

I only do alcohol and caffene, but Hawkwind has got to be one of the best for druggish music, that or else some obscure classics (Philip Glass maybe).
For drug related music, Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit must be about tops.

My two favorties are Pink Floyd and DJ Tiesto. When I go into an altered state I have playlists for each type of drug. These two bands/DJ’s are on all of them.

Mmm… Tiesto.

Sig is perfect here…

Hm. My stoner friends back in the day were into Monster Magnet and Nurse With Wound. Interesting combination, that.

Soul Couchging
Sublime
Ozric Tentacles

I had a very surreal experience once while “on weed” with Pink Floyd’s “Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict” off Umma Gumma (sp?). Try that one with headphones on.

Soul Coughing

:smack:

Dude…are you the guy who stole all my records about ten years ago???

You’ll go paranoid listening to that song. All those small, furry animals around you sitting in a cave and grooving with a pict. That’s just crazy.

For me it’s not a particular group, although I’m surprised no one has mentioned Iron Butterfly. It’s the hammond organ. Nearly any group using a hammond organ will sound while in an altered state. Pink Floyd, The Doors, Yes, Jethro Tull, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Santana, etc. It’s all about the organ, man.
