We always had it on bonfire night, since that involves the most standing around outside in cold weather.
I guess the vodka in the glögg was peculiar to the Swedish guy who made it for us… made for an interesting evening though.
Last time I had glögg, though there wasn’t any vodka involved, it came with a couple of biscuits for dunking. God bless the Swedes for finding a way to get alcohol into a cookie!
The closest I get to hot wine is Chicken Marsala.
I remember when a friend of mine was sent out by her boss to buy ingredients for the office batch of glögg. She said she felt a little embarrassed in the off licens when she ordered one bottle of cheap vodka and ten bottles of very cheap wine.
Yum. I must get my mead from my parent’s house and mull some. Mead and hot spiced cider is very good, too. And a hot cranberry/red wine combo would be lovely.
Mmmmm, gluhwein. I have a couple of friends who make it and it’s lovely. I don’t remember the exact details, but it involves burgundy, sugar, lemon/orange, cinnamon, and cloves. The only trouble is that it’s entirely too easy to drink four glasses of the stuff and then you realize that you can’t stand up.
The communion wine in the Orthodox churches is warm, having had a small amount of boiling water added to it before it is consumed. Furthermore, in the Russian practice, after receiving communion one takes three swallows of hot (non-sanctified) wine.
Hot mulled wine from a street vendor?? Where were you again? Heaven?
Mmmmmm it’s SO good.
Glühwein for me during the holidays (especially if I’m in Germany). To make your own, may I suggest GermanDeli.com for the mix, or if you’re a purist, there are several recipes on the net.
Prosit Neu Jahr!

Regarding Glögg, I don’t find it too different to the “Mulled Wine” we drink back home, but I do like the practice of serving it with almonds and raisins. Definitely recommended.
Hot wine… ummmm, a must-have in ski stations in France.
It is delicious.
Actually, the only part of skiiing I like.
If you’ve got a Williams-Sonoma store in your area, they sell a mix for mulled wine or cider, and also an oversized tea ball to put the mix in. Good stuff.
