I built my own. I have a PII-333, 10GB HD, 64MB RAM, 4XDVD, some kinda sound card w/ 8MB on it.
As for upgrades, I have always used the “only upgrade when the software I just bought won’t run without upgrading something” scheme. Since I built this system all I have had to do was add RAM and a new video card.
My PC–>
Abit KT7-Raid Mobo (supports up to 8 IDE devices)
Athlon T-Bird 1.1GHz Processor
256MB of RAM
Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer (I had to get one kind of software bundle- might as well be games)
3DFX AGP Voodoo 3 card (with a squirrelcage slot fan next to the heatsink)
3-Com 3C900 Ethernet card hooked to a cable modem
ViewSonic A90 19" monitor
Altec Lansing ATP5 4 channel speakers with subwoofer
Boring case spraypainted with that fake granite paint
Slow 16x Creative Labs CD drive
4x2x2 CDR-W drive
30GB ATA-100 Maxtor HD
Trackman Marble cordless
A generic Ergonomic Keyboard with an unused trackpad.
New Fully Modded Case Coming Soon!
complete with window, neon, and blowholes!
Whooo!
The above is why I don’t have a new car. I currently make minor upgrades every 2-3 months and usually change the mobo and processor every 1-2 years.
My last upgrade was a month ago, and was about 650 - 750 dollars (new mobo, processor, 256MB ram, and a new case)

Apollo KT133A Via MoBo
AMD Athlon 1.1GHz TBird Processor
128 MB RAM
30 G Western Digital IDE Drive
… Still piecing together what I can… need a couple of cooling fans and a USB card…
Anyone know where I can get a decent KVM switchbox cheap? What’s good? I never actually used one…
I’m also equipped with one Apple PowerMac 8500/120MB RAM, 2 G Drive;
…and one Performa 6116CD 2 G Drive, 64 MB RAM.
I’m planning on needing four. I’ve been having problems with USB hubs, slowing up the bootup on my current pc.
And I wanna try networking with USB also, just for kicks…
