At least one person in [url=http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=152701]this thread[/ulr] joked that his area of expertise was himself. But a few people, who clearly think I need therapy, have intimated to me that I do not understand myself. So there goes my one shot.
Seriously, though. When I was a kid, the thing people oohed and ahhed over me for was my reading level. Then most everybody caught up to me. No one is impressed if I say, “I’m only 21, but I read on a 42-year-old level!”
I have no area of expertise. None. Now I want some other people to admit to the same thing to make me feel less pathetic. Go on, now. Speak up.
I’m with you. It’s not that I don’t have many gifts and talents; it’s just that they’re not really anything that a bunch of other people don’t also have. I know something about English grammar, but not really any more than another English major; I have some experience in parenting, but so does every other parent; I have a little knowledge about health and health insurance issues, but there are plenty of actual health professionals who know more.
Let’s try to frame this in a more positive way, though. It’s not that we aren’t experts in anything, we’ve just developed a broader base of knowledge than some of these others have.
Broader base yes thats it…
:::TM shuffles of muttering to self::::
…yeah broader base,of course,why didn’t I think of that,I like that,BROADER BASE uuhhuuhh…
Ohh me, me. I’m one you. I’m not an expert in anything. I have a littl eknowledge here and there but not enough to be known for anything particular. Does this mean we are high mediocre?
