I’ve heard this bit about Oklahoma’s so-so defense letting teams hang around a couple of times this week (giving Bradford more PT) but it’s just not true. OU never trailed at the half, and only led by a TD or less twice. Their opponents really only had a snowball’s chance 4 times in 13 games at the half. The average OU lead at half was 23.5 points, while their average delta at the end of the game was 29.5. Oklahoma scored a bunch of points fast most of the year; for example they hung 28 on Nebraska in the first five and half minutes. So, one may be able to claim that Stoops left Bradford in longer than was really sporting, or that OU ran up the score to pad stats, but in no way did an Oklahoma defense let anybody hang around who souldn’t have been in the game.
Point taken.
Still, look at Florida compared to Oklahoma or Texas in terms of scoring defense. Florida allowed 19 touchdowns all year, while Texas gave up 27 and Oklahoma allowed 42. Only two teams scored more than 20 points on the Gators, nine teams scored more than 20 on the Sooners and five scored more than 20 on the Longhorns.
That said, it’s certainly not Bradford or McCoy’s job to worry about their defense, it’s their job to score touchdowns and move the offense, and that’s what they’ve done. Fair play to them, and congratulations to both of them for their fine seasons and accomplishments. I look forward to seeing them both in the NFL. Wouldn’t mind seeing one of them down here.
Another BCS national title game with Heisman winners on each team! And both sophomore winners, at that. Why is the vote due before the final game of the year?
Utter nonsense. Florida would have lost six games without Tebow.
I wonder if Billy Sims will be invited back for future ceremonies. He was the guy shouting “Boomer” 11 times and embarrassing everyone, including Bradford. Any word on whether he was drunk or high?
Insane, you are. I’ll give you four, at a tremendous stretch, five.
Now, without McCoy, Texas would have lost at least 6 games…at least.
Again, regardless of how many hypothetical games Florida would have lost without Tebow, McCoy was more important to his team than Tebow to his.
Does that necessarily win you a Heisman? Obviously not. Should it? I believe so.
No, right I am.
Hawaii W 56-10 1-0 (0-0)
Miami (FL) W 26-3 2-0 (0-0)
at Tennessee W 30-6 3-0 (1-0)
Mississippi L 31-30 3-1 (1-1)
at Arkansas W 38-7 4-1 (2-1)
No. 4 LSU W 51-21 5-1 (3-1)
Kentucky W 63-5 6-1 (4-1)
at No. 6 Georgia W 49-10 7-1 (5-1)
at Vanderbilt W 42-14 8-1 (6-1)
No. 25 South Carolina W 56-6 9-1 (7-1)
Citadel W 70-19 10-1 (7-1)
at No. 20 Florida State W 45-15 11-1 (7-1)
vs. No. 1 Alabama* W 31-20 12-1 (7-1)
Please indicate the five other games Florida would have lost without Tebow.
Without Tebow, would Florida have suffered:
A 46 point turnaround against Hawaii?
A 24 point turnaround against a Tennessee team that lost to Wyoming (Wyoming!!) at home after having gave up only 13 points?
A 31 point turnaround against Arkansas?
A 30 point turnaround against LSU?
A 39 point turnaround against Georgia?
A 50 point turnaround against South Carolina?
A 28 point turnaround against Vandy?
A 51 point turnaround against The Citidel?
A 30 point turnaround against Florida State?
A 23 point turnaround against Miami (Fla.)?
Florida offensive points per game 45.2
Florida defensive points per game: 12.8
Since the defense held it’s opponents to 14 or less in most games, and Tebow’s absence would have had no effect on the defense, the back-up QB couldn’t have managed the 17 or more points required to win the 10 games the defense held their opponents under that total?
Miami, Tennessee, Ole Miss already a loss, LSU, Georgia and FSU.
This isn’t true. The offense has a large effect on the defense. If your offense blows and your defense is on the field all the time then they’re not going to play as well and give up more points.
In theory.
Even if true, do you really think Florida’s offense would’ve suffered such a meltdown as to reverse the eight 30+ point victories for Florida?
I’m pretty sure a person (presumably Blaylock) good enough to rank second on Florida’s QB depth chart is good enough to not make the defense labor too much.
Please justify.
Miami: 26-3. Florida would have to have been shut-out.
Tennessee: 30-6. As mentioned earlier, a Tennessee team that lost at home to Wyoming, scoring only 7 points.
Ole Miss: Given, as Florida lost anyway.
LSU: 51-21; Georgia: 49-10; FSU: 45-15. The loss of Tebow would have reversed all 3 of these 30+ point victories? The offense would’ve performed so badly without Tebow that the defense would have, as described by Snarky_Kong, suffered a collapse, allowing much more points, reversing their 8 30+ point victories and 11 20+ point victories?
I don’t think so. As I stated above, I’m pretty sure any QB ranked second on Florida’s depth chart would be good enough to support such a dominant defense and score the minimum it would take to win, in Florida’s case, 17 points would have won 9 games and 21 points would have won 12.
No, I have seen Florida’s backup QBs play. Frankly, they suck. When John Brandtley is in there, I often think the play has been blown dead because he is that fucking immobile in the pocket.
