U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro of the District of Columbia posted a video to social media showcasing the roughly 54-pound chunk of space rock. At that weight, it’s 70% larger than any Martian meteorite found on Earth, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute.
“A lot of people have had their hands on it, or more than your hands, but the truth is that we don’t know who owns it,” Pirro said. “So we own it now.”
The ownership of the meteorite may be in question, but one party that very definitely doesn’t have legal rights to it is the US Government.
Under Title 19, Section 1595a, federal authorities can seize any asset of value smuggled into the country without first being declared to customs. Customs often seizes currency or other luxury items if the owner fails to declare them when entering the country.
“Customs has no record of it ever coming into the United States,” Pirro said, “so guess what, the United States government owns it now.”
I wish the aliens it belonged to would come and claim it. And take Donnie with them. They’d probably send him back, a la The Ransom of Red Chief or that movie Ruthless People.
Re bingo cards: a trump bingo card has to be the size of a tennis court to cover everything.
@DSeid But didn’t the convict-in-chief and his magat crowd freak out when it was pointed out Kal-El was illegally smuggled into the country? They insist he’s all American. So the chunck of space rock must be, too!
It’s an illegal alien meteorite. What else should the trump admin do but confiscate and detain it? It doesn’t deserve to be in a museum— it would be taking up valuable museum space that a meteorite that legally entered our country deserves to have.
Look at yourself Jeanie. Look at what you’ve become. You’re on the cover of a supermarket tabloid next to the story of a woman who’s baby was fathered by bigfoot and a discovery of remains of gay aliens.
We liked you better when you were day drinking and threatening to report your housekeeper to immigration.
