I’ve got a Motorola V551 which does a decent enough job, its upgrade the V557 seems like an improvement, but looking at all the Blackberries, Razrs, Slvrs, etc. out there I’m thinking there has to be better. Am particularly interested in taking good pictures, anyone have a capable cellphone that they recommend? Have a cingular account if that makes any difference.
Reason I’m looking for upgrade is my sister has just gotten a Samsung sch-a950 that now sends me videos I can’t play, because they are too long or something, says my text message error notice.
Hi,
I use a Blackberry, because it’s by far the best in terms of email. If pictures are important to you though, I can’t recommend a Treo highly enough- email, internet, pictures, video-- and, if you get one with the Palm operating system, you can find thousands of free programs to put on the phone.
I know you can install other programs on the Windows Mobile version of the Treo (the 700w), but I’m not sure that there is as big a selection.
Also, make sure you get an unlimited data plan, instead of paying by kilobyte if you’re going to be using the internet, or you’ll end up paying a fortune every month.

Thanks for the great advice, particularly the kb stuff!
So far, after paging through the CNET cellphone reviews, I’d have to agree, the Palm Treo 650 seems to grade out the best with the only drawback for me being its 0.3 megapixel camera, which given the Cingular 8125 and Nokia 6682’s 1.3 megapixel cameras, seemed a bit slight.
I have a Verizon XV6700 and it is the CDMA brother of the Cingular 8125 (both made by HTC yet sold under a bunch of different brands). The cam on it can go up to 1.3 Mpixels. I think the photos are decent. You can see some outside photos I took on the 3 or 4 most recent photos on my blog. Actually, the picture of my eye turned out the best, I think the golf pics are bad because I was pointing into the sun, and outdoors the screen kinda sucked so I couldn’t see how bad they were (setting on 640x480 resolution, not 1.3 Mpixel). I haven’t tried the videos.
Cheers and good luck.
Opinions are best gotten in IMHO.

I have a Nokia N70 without which I would be lost. 2.0 MP camera, 20 MB of internal memory, hot-swappable memory card slot supporting reduced-sized MMCs of up to 1 GB, media player, video / photo editing, Opera Mobile (with Javascript and everything! The Dope on the go!), EDGE support, and damned good PDA functions. Also, it makes great phone calls.
I can’t recommend it enough.
Keep in mind that even a basic digital camera will take a better picture then pretty much any phone.
Check out the TMobile MDA and SDA–1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, gorgeous screens on the things and the MDA is a touch screen PDA phone. I’m drooling for the MDA, I think it’s my next phone… I’m such a geek…
Good grief, Cingular totally jammed me up on the 8125 I finally decided on, so I had to pit it. Bambi Hassenpfeffer that Nokia N70 looks great, but of course Cingular (who I have a current subscription with) doesn’t support it apparently for this area, or maybe I’m misunderstanding its website. SmartAleq I’d take either MDA or SDA, but I still have about 10 months on my Cingular subscription. Cripes, I’m thinking of revisting the Treo 650, but it has a crap camera comparatively. A fellow in my pit thread suggested I cast my net a bit farther on the internet (beyond Cingular) for the 8125, but most seem to require a 2-year subscription for a decent price, and I don’t know how that would work with my current subscription, if it would supercede it or what, have to call Cingular tomorrow and ask I’spose. This is getting aggravating. Alas.
If your sister has t-mobile, there is a problem sending videos and even pictures to a samsung phone using Outlook Express. I always get an ‘Incomplete message’ error on the phone.
On the other hand, if I send the same video or picture using Thunderbird I never have a problem.
If it’s phone to phone, it still could be a problem with samsung. I have the t-309 phone, BTW, and it takes great pics and short (15 sec) videos.

Yeah, its phone to phone, I have a Motorola v551, and the error message I keep getting is as follows:
“One or more of the message components have been deleted my MMS Adaptation. Either the message was too large or the components were unsuitable for your terminal.”
Broke down and ebayed a Cingular 8125, paying about $200 more than if I had got one through Cingular (who still can’t tell me when they will have it in stock), but no 2yr. contract though. Hopefully I’ll actually get it.
Dude, TMobile and Cingular are both GSM 1900Mhz–find an MDA or SDA that’s unlocked and it will take a Cingular SIM card–I bet the data settings would be dead easy to have sent OTA to your phone, too. Is Cingular still doing SIM unlocks for customers? We just got the word that we at TMo can’t get unlocks for Cingy phones anymore, but I don’t know if that’s just them not wanting to deal with us or if it means they just aren’t unlocking phones any more…
A nice resource for this phone is PDA Phone Home it includes forum topics from favorite software to registry hacks. FYI – the Cingular 8125, T-mobile MDA, I-Mate K-Jam and QTEK 9100 are the same phones, all known as the HTC Wizard.
Cheers and good luck.
I bet Bill Gates does.
