I don’t think I have enough info for a thread. I can tell it to you in a single post. The Nungs guarded the perimeter of Nha Trang base. I met one of them and always ready to practice my Vietnamese, I engaged him in conversation. He taught me to say
ngo hai yut goh me goh yun (pinyin below)
wo shi yi ge mei guo ren
lei hai yut goh zong goh yun (pinyin below)
ni shi yi ge zhong guo ren
Burnt Sugar, I recommend that you check out taking your vacations in Taiwan or Singapore. It will really help. Just traveling through a country as a tourist is amazingly good for your speaking ability because you are forced to speak the language.
Wo qi yue dasuan qu Xingjiapo, danshi
… only for 3 days (stopover). I would love to spend my holidays there… it’s just a matter of dollars!
I have been to China, and I have to say, it did help. I was thinking “please” and “thankyou” and “excuse me” and suchlike when I returned. I hadn’t been learning it very well when I went there though.
my two previous replies were hamstered. honest.
I was at ShiDa for 18 months in 1975/76. I liked the people and the food. As far as air quality, a marathon runner at the Korean Olympic games said it best: “When you hit the wall, you can taste it.”
I was in Taibei when Prez Jiang died and went to his museum when they were just putting it together (or maybe to the military museum when they were just building the Jiang exhibit). The curator walked around in one of the Prez’s military greatcoats. I held a bunch of Jiang’s military medals in my hand because they had not built display cases yet.the thought went through my mind. Then the second thought went through my mind: they will hunt you to the ends of the earth and kill you. So I put the medals back.
Talking to you guys has made me hunger for a soup noodle dish that they sell on Long Chuan Jie. Hong Shao Niu Rou Mien. Does anyone have an approximate recipe ? I don’t want anything that you would have to pledge to a Tong/Triad for.
Or should I start a secret Chinese recipe thread ?
