Who has the best instruments, and why? (RB1 vs RB2 vs GHWT)

Sorry if this was done already, but I didn’t see it in a quick search. I’ve seen discussions about which game was thought to be better, but I’m interested solely in the instruments, since I’ll probably wind up getting all the games (to get all the songs).

So does anyone have mutliple versions of instruments that they’re willing to share opinions on? Specifically, I’d be interested in RB1 vs RB2 since the RB1 bundle is selling for $50-60 less than the RB2 bundle. Is the extra coin worth the upgrade?

Just an additional note, I am aware of the GHWT drum incompatibilty with RB on the PS3. For the purposes of this thread, let’s assume it will get patched soon.

Thanks!

For normal people, the OP is referring to the Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band video games.

Sorry if it was unclear. I assumed since I posted in the Game Room, and put the common acronyms for the games in parenthesis, my intended audience would be able to figure it out.

(And are you implying that people who play fake musical instruments are not “normal”?)

My Level 71 Gnome Mage says you’re a geek!

I have GHWT and I like it. The drum kit is certainly nicer than the RB1 kit - you’ve got two raised cymbals and the pads are much softer & quieter. The guitar is nicer than the RB1 and original GH guitars (I also have GH3 so can compare the two directly) - buttons are quieter, strum bar is bigger, it’s got a touch-pad on the neck for some additional effects, they moved some of the buttons around (so for example it’s harder to hit the “PS” button while going nuts on the whammy bar) and the guitar body is a bit bigger - in case you were ever bothered by trying to rock like Angus Young while basically holding a ukelele.

I haven’t played RB2 so no thoughts on that. Like you I’m eagerly awaiting the patch so that RB2 will recognize GHWT drums (and it seems to me that the fault for that lies with the makers of RB2, not GHWT).

One other thing, the GHWT kick pedal doesn’t sit on rails like the RB1 pedal does, however it’s very stable. My TV room is carpeted with a somewhat thick pile and the GHWT pedal does not move around at all.

Got the guitars confused - the GHWT guitar is the one with the PS button right near the whammy bar so you have to be a little careful or you can accidentally pause the game while whammying. This is on the PS3 obviously, dunno how the other console versions compare.

Valgard, thanks for the review, and the clarification. Now, anyone with Rock Band 2 want to weigh in?

The RB1 guitar is wired (all others are wireless) and isn’t that reliable. Mine only held up a few weeks before it broke in two seperate ways. My RB drum pedal didn’t last much longer.

I haven’t played the RB2 guitar but the GHWT guitar seems very nice.

RB2 drums are supposed to be a marginal upgrade on the RB1 drums - a little quieter and more rugged. GHWT drums are probably cooler, but less reliable - a lot of them fail very quickly.

I use the Ion drum kit (http://www.drumrocker.com/) which is way, way better than any of the kits that come with the game. Looks like it’s not available for the PS3 yet.

I’d probably recommend getting the RB2 combo set and the GHWT guitar bundle, if you’re not getting an Ion.

GHWT somewhat screws over everyone who isn’t using the GHWT drum set - they have a rock band compatability mode that reduces their 6 instrument drums to RB1-kit compatable 5 instruments… and the way they choose to map the instruments to fewer tracks is kind of stupid. It pisses me off because my Ion kit has even more instruments than the GHWT kit, and yet they force it to act like a RB1 kit. This I presume also screws RB2 kit owners that have the cymbals upgrade as it won’t detect the cymbals seperately. This is something they could’ve implemented support for, but didn’t… I kinda regret buying GHWT because of that.

My experience with RB2 kit with cymbal expansions and GH:WT.

  1. Treats it like a Rock Band 4 pad kit.
  2. When you hit your cymbal expansion it gets convinced your 4 pad got disconnected.
  3. You disconnect and reconnect (maybe minus the cymbals) and it determines your kit is a GH:WT kit, which you can’t play because you don’t have the orange pad.
  4. You give up and play guitar (or go back to Rock Band) because GH:WT now officially hates you.

As far as the instruments go completely:

I like the GH guitar more than either RB controller, though this is mainly preference and not due to any actual better/worse things. I play RB more for various reasons. My friend like the way the buttons are spaced on the RB controller more so YMMV.

I like the RB2 Drum-kit more than the other kits. I’ll admit I’ve only monkeyed around with the GH:WT one in store displays, but I like the feel of the RB2 one more, HOWEVER I have the double universal cymbal expansion, one for green and one for yellow, if I didn’t I think I like the WT one more so it depends if you want to shell out the 30 bucks for the cymbals (btw, if you do, be sure to get lots of masking tape to keep them from moving).

Mic doesn’t matter.

Personally I’d (and have) get the RB2 full band pack, and the Guitar Hero World Tour guitar bundle, but that’s just me.

I’d get the RB2 pack before I got the RB1 pack, mostly because the original instruments are almost anti-durable, most people I know have replaced the guitar twice, and the drums anywhere from one to three times. The only issue I’ve had with the RB2 drums was that one of the cymbal expansions decided to just stop working, but that’s my only data-point, and from what I can tell browsing the internet, that may very well have been a fluke. I’ll be able to comment on the ION in a week or two, since I’m getting one later this week (and the PS3 one is shipping, you just can’t get it from the official site… for some reason. That or the combined forces of GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon are all screwing with my mom who specifically asked for a PS3 one).
