Who have you seen live that is no longer with us?

(Re: Allman Brothers Band)

And Greg Allman?

As for myself, the only one I can think of that’s notable is Jerry Garcia with The Dead.

My mother was in the hospital with Steven Van Zandt’s mom. He came to the room all the time and I knew he was someone, but I couldn’t figure out who he was until Bruce Springsteen came in. My mom and Mrs. Van Zandt died on the same day.

Yes. I hadn’t realized he died.
If we want to include actors, I’ve seen Maureen O’Hara, Howard da Silva, Gilda Radner, Hamilton Camp, Mary Frann, Jack Cassady, Richard Libertini, Linda Lavin, and Steve Allen on stage.

I saw John Ritter in The Dinner Party on Broadway. It was a shock when he died a few years later…such a likeable actor.

In the fall of 1989 and spring of 1990, I attended the concerts of four musicians, and all four were dead within the couple of years that followed:
Art Blakey (died Oct 1990)
Miles Davis (died Sept 1991)
John Cage (died Aug 1992)
Frank Zappa (died Dec 1993)

In that same period I also went to my only two Grateful Dead shows. Jerry Garcia, of course, died not long after these others – August 1995.

Leonard Cohen, about seven or eight years ago, in the most incredible concert I have ever been to.

Wow!

Not sure how I missed that, especially since i was looking for it. That’ll teach me to read the Dope while at work (more reading, less skimming).

I saw the Ramones (without Marky and Dee Dee). Joey and Johnny have passed on.

Bobby Blue Bland, Albert King and BB King (all at the same show)

Chris Squire
Brad Delp
Chester Bennington

About a thousand years ago in Baltimore

John Mayall and the blues breakers (w/Eiric Clapton) opening for
Big Brother and the Nolding Company are (Janis Joplin) opening for
The Doors

Janis was called back for three encores

Also

Jimi Hendricks & and Joplin right before she died. Had a Magnum of Southern Comfort

Those were the days

A couple of members of Los Lobos have passed away, but they weren’t a really famous band. I did party with them after a show in Madison, WI in college. I have absolutely no idea how I scored that, but it was at Butch Vig’s club. (GS Vig’s) He was to become a famous producer (Nirvana’s Nevermind) but I didn’t know him from Adam. It was just me and my girlfriend and the band and the Vig brothers drinking beers on the back porch. Absolutely no idea how I ended up out there.

Butch Vig plays drums for Garbage (Stupid Girl, I’m Only Happy When It Rains)

Also in Baltimore, at the Civic Center:

Terry Reid, 1st opening act
B.B. King, 2nd opening act
Rolling Stones, main act

… for the princely sum of $7.50/ticket.

Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Cozy Powell.

All 3 of the musicians from my first rock concert are dead, the suicide of Keith Emerson was a tragedy that hurt me.

I can remember seeing Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson in concert as well.

Doc Watson
Guy Clark
Levon Helm
Richie Havens
Rob Wasserman and Vince Welnick
Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks
BB King
Malcolm Young
Allen Toussaint
Merle Haggard

Wow – was that the 1969 tour? If so, one of the Baltimore show’s songs (I can’t recall which) made it onto the LP Get Yer Ya-yas Out!. We recently had a thread on Dopers who attended performances released as live albums – maybe you already contributed to that thread.

Now I remember another notable one: Sam Kinison. Mrs. FtG and I went to see him … on Valentines Day. Definitely set the mood. :stuck_out_tongue:

Pete Seege
Oscar Peterson
Vic Vogel (locally famous big band leader)

Chris Cornell, with Temple of the Dog. One of his last concerts…such a shame it was such a short reunion because it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen!

Saw Tom Petty in 1994. Saw The Who with John Entwistle about a year before he left us.

Seriously many that have been mention and one who, I think, hasn’t. John Belushi with “The Blues Brothers”.
