I live in an extremely walkable neighbourhood, and don’t own a car. Because of this, I walk for between a half-hour and two hours a day, and my job involves walking and lifting. Because of this, I probably get at least an hour of decent exercise a day.
It occured to me (in one of those mundane epiphany moments where I recognise something quite obvious) that there are probably people who get way less exercise than that per day. People with desk jobs, and cars, who live in suburbs. People who are lazy. People who don’t have time.
So, how much actual physical effort do you expend per day? How much or how little? Tell me about it.
When I was in high school I had to walk all over the campus between classes. Had a gym class, walked to school, home for lunch, back to school and home after school. Plus I worked about 20 hours on the weekend. For my job, I spent the better part of the day moving 50# boxes around.
Now, I have a desk job then I drive home and watch TV. That’s pretty much it.
At the moment, since it’s summer, I walk around the house a bit going between the bathroom, my room, the kitchen, the computer, and the TV. Every couple of days I work on the hol in my front yard, which is pretty strenuous labor. Other than that, I’m pretty much lazy.
Of course, when I go back to school, that’s going to change quite a bit…
I have a desk job and live 20km from work, so I drive.
The flat is a third floor, no lift, so I get some walking up and down stairs, plus I’m hanging pictures and stuff (hey, that BnD’s heavy!) and most of the storage space in my kitchen is up high.
The static bike looks glumly at me every time I go into that room.
I’ve located a gym that doesn’t require membership and which is on the way from home to work. It will still be on the way when we move to the new offices. But because of summer hours, it’s not very convenient at the time. It’s right next door to an ice rink - which reopens next month, when we’ll be leaving work at 6pm. I want to see whether they have skating classes for Ancient Ones. I’ve never done any figure-skating, but still used to love going skating as a kid.
When I’m at Mom’s (currently, every weekend), between going shopping and going for walks I walk about 2h every day.
Until two weeks ago, I think I might have qualified.
I used to walk out of my apartment (one room apartment, so no opportunities there), take the lift downstairs, cross the road, catch a car to work.
Catch the lift up to the office.
Very occasionally go into the city, but usually catch a car to do so. So no walking when changing lines on the metro, or walking from the bus stop to the place I was going.
However, that’s all changed. I just joined a gym, with a swimming pool. And I hate to say it, but I feel a lot better.
I exercised once, in 1960, for 20 minutes. It was a jazzercize routine, that, iirc, was set to the music of Duran Duran. I don’t recall the song, but it was deep.
90 minutes/4 days a week. Walking and running. Other than that, I don’t get much exercise unless I have to be downtown for something, and then I get quite a bit of walking done. I don’t work outside the home, and I drive to shop. I can’t claim I like exercise, but I hate being out of shape even worse.
Since I injured my knee playing in a tennis tournament 2 weeks ago, I haven’t done anything. What aerobic exercise can someone do (at home) with a bum knee?
It sucks having a knee injury. It’s getting better but I’m afraid I’ll reinjure it if I get on the treadmill or the exercise bike…
I work at home at a desk job a lot of the time. If I don’t make it a point to exercise, it’s pretty easy to get zero exercise in a day. However, I do make a point to get out and do something almost every day. Biking, running, walking, etc.
Ooo! Something I can win. I live on one floor. I drive to and from work and try to get to work in time for parking not more that 100 feet from the door. I take the elevator up to the office. I sit typing on the SDMB all day. I walk to and from the staff kitchen or bathroom (25 feet away) maybe four times a day. I take the elevator back down and drive home. I make food and park it on the couch until it is time to go to bed.
On the positive side, I am trying to eat a little more healthfully.
My daily regimen of exercise consists of the walk from my car to my office, from my office to lunch, back to the office, and finally back to the car. It adds up to about 15-20 minutes of walking everyday. I both live and work on the second floor so I think that all of that stair climbing has to add up.
I used to have a job that would get me closer to 2-3 hours of walking every day, but my skills and interests have always had me destined for a desk job so I considered that a fluke at the time and I have little doubt it will ever happen again.
A day without exercise is like a day without sunshine. I don’t feel right unless I get in at least 30 minutes (an “easy” day). I get in a run, bike ride, hike/walk, or swim most every day. If I could find a dependable partner, I’d be out on the tennis courts on a regular basis, as well.
