Who here has had/has a Keeshond(dog)?

I’ve been trying to narrow down the search for Next Dog TM and these sound interesting. They are in the size range I like and don’t seem to have issues with aggression.

What was/is your dog like?

Lots of hair that’s prone to matting, so you have to be prepared for a decent amount of grooming time.but they are really sweet and friendly, And mine was a good visitor alarm, but not noisy otherwise. Absolutly one of my favorite dogs.

I never had one myself but some of my clients had them.
I think they are great dogs as long as you don’t mind the hair.
They are on my list of a good beginner dog for families with children.

I have met a couple of them and think they are great. However, if you don’t mind the hair, you could also look at Samoyeds and Eskimo Dogs. I had a Samoyed that was so striking when he was groomed that he would literally stop traffic but he was sweet as they came especially with kids. American Eskimo dogs are similar but smaller.

I intend to add one the next time we get a dog. I haven’t had one yet, but I have had a ton of Pomeranians, and they are first cousins. Find a reputable breeder and you will get a companion/watchdog with a sweet temperament, wonderful personality and all the love you could ever ask for.

And fur, lots of fur. The only con I can think of, but a weekly brushing to the skin and keeping an eye out for mats is the solution for that. Lovely breed!

My ex’s aunt had a few. Very nice/docile dogs (at least her’s were). Seconding/thirding the comments about all the hair. Sure, you can brush them on a regular basis…maybe then your house will only have as much hair as it would if you had a golden retriever.

FWIW, as big as those dogs look, they’re about the size of a cat underneath.

While I was not the owner, my roommate had one, and he was very goodnatured. He also needed brushing every single day, hm I see everyone has mentioned that. Hans was a very athletic dog and always willing to go on a walk, or a run. But if you weren’t up to that he was also quite willing to take a nap. Not at all aggressive. Friendly with my dog, friendly with our cats. I actually probably liked him better than I liked my roommate.

My parents and I used to raise them. Never knew one that wasn’t sweet as can be, loved cuddles and CRAZY smart. I did obedience with one of our girls named Gypsy- got my highest obedience score ever with her (198… 200 is considered perfect!)

Great with other animals, people of all ages. One of my very favorite breeds. I just got burned out on the grooming… at one time we had 7 adults, and guess who did all the grooming???

My husband’s/son’s barber used to have one, which he had at the barbershop. Very calm, just lay there all the time. I guess all the shed hair wasn’t a problem since they were sweeping up customers’ hair all the time.

Our neighbor had one when I was growing up. It didn’t like kids, so my mom told me to stay away from it. That’s pretty much all I can remember about it (I don’t even remember if it was a male or a female).

I’ve not known one personally, but they are very cute!
