Same with my husband. He has a great voice, and sang a cappella in college and did some musicals, but never had formal training beyond that.
I can carry a tune, but I’ve gotten much, much better with practice, too. My husband has helped a lot. Both my singing and speaking voice are lower than your average woman’s, too, so I had to learn to work with that - I sound a lot better singing stuff traditionally meant for a man. I’d love some sort of professional lessons someday, though. I’ll never be good enough to sing professionally or anything, but I think I could be a lot better than I am.
I’m a good singer and used to sing in a band. I can do a pretty spot on Robert Plant or Chris Cornell at a karaoke bar, or Harry Connick Jr. if the atmosphere is more croonery. I very definitely had to work at it.
I’m a good singer and it was a born talent but once I got into the whole auditioning/status game in school, I took voice lessons to make sure my voice could be tip top. I think being able to sing well is something people are born with but to truly become excellent you have to work at it. It’s definitely a skill you can pick up again as I found out by joining a community chorus as an adult.
I’ve played in bands for the last 20 years. I play drums and started singing when our lead singer quit (as the main songwriter it was a natural step). My band was set up kind of like the Eagles…everyone writes, everyone plays an instrument, everyone sings. I’m not trained as a singer and it did take me a while to find my voice. But it can be done. I’m currently finishing up a solo project, which can be heard here.
