I always see his picture on tshirts and I was wondering if anybody can please explain to me who this man is and what he has done. Thanks
Wasn’t he a Cuban revolutionary (or maybe Mexican) who led revolts against Spanish rule? However, I think his image has been borrowed over time by Marxist leaders in order to galanize public opinion behind nationalistic causes.
He was an Argentinian, originally a physician, who became a revolutionary, in Guatemala, and later, more successfully in Cuba, as a very effective commander of guerilla forces, under Castro. He was briefly Minister if Industry in Castro’s government, but soon left to foment revolution in Bolivia. He was killed in Bolivia, by forces supporting the Bolivian Government.
He wrote several books on guerilla warfare, and revolution, which were read by many members of the American political left, in the late sixties.
Tris
Che was a fucking Hero. Jean Paul Sartre said he was the “most complete human being” He was born in Argentina , he won the Cuban revolution for Castro and was assasinated in bolivia in a CIA orchestrated ambush in 1967.
Being a fan of Che Guevara is a trendy thing among leftists.
I’ve noticed the Che Tshirts and buttons on such on the Trendy Lefties, too.
The only thing I could never figure out is why THIS guy is on Tshirts. Aren’t there a lot of rebels?
So, to add to the OP, what makes him so much more special than other revolutionists?
My mother bought one of these t-shirts, and she got pretty dissapointed when I didn’t want to wear it. I have to admit it looked pretty cool though. (:
For starters, he looked good. Can’t underestimate that.
Also (and this is most important, I think), Che Guevara never won. He never got fat and happy. He never settled down.
Fidel Castro is now known as the dictator of Cuba. There’s accusations of torture of political prisoners (and the taking of political prisoners, which is bad enough), curtailing freedom of speech, human rights violations and so forth.
Che Guevara fought with Fidel Castro and could have stayed there living well in Cuba for the rest of his life, but he kept the fight going and fell in combat. He remains a romantic figure, like Robin Hood. The plucky underdog fighting the big bad establishment. His legend never ran headfirst into reality. I think that’s key.
Che Guevera.
C’mon, folks, it took me 5 seconds to find this site. Aren’t we getting a little lazy here?
Umm, Bolivia 1967. The locals didn’t want to have anything to do with him, his attempted revolution was a big bust and his execution (hardly an assasination) resulted. That sounds like running headfirst into reality to me.
My thoughts exactly. Remember, boys and girls, Google is your friend…
Heres a Wikipedia article on the man.
Google is your friend, but the accuracy of any information is always a little suspect. I personally think that sites like Wikipedia [or others mentioned in the sticky at the top] are much more useful then any Google search becuase they give accurate information.
Re-read my post, and I’m sure the meaning of that sentence will come clear.
