Who knew Rumi was a perfect fit for Bluegrass, Gospel, and Blues?

The other day my girlfriend and I were browsing at our local lesbian owned and operated feminist bookstore, Charis Books and More.

We ended up buying a copy of the “Special Music Edition” of One Song: A New Illuminated Rumi.

It includes a copy of the cd Traveling Light byThe Illumination Band, which we’ve been listening to for a couple of days.

These folks are definitely worth a listen, and their adaptation of Rumi’s poetry to the traditional folk music styles of bluegrass, gospel and the blues is smooth and seamless.

I’m contemplating giving the cd as a “winter solstice” gift to both my agnostic music-loving mother and her devout Christian brother and his wife. It has that kind of scope.
