Im currently stationed in Italy and Im dying to see as much of europe as possible. Where are you from in europe and why would your city/town be a great place to visit? Oh, Im a 29 yo single male if that helps narrow it down. Thanks
I live near Amsterdam and work right in the city center, and spend most of my weekend in Maastricht. I can definitely recommend both cities.
Ohhh…Amsterdam. Thats definately on the list. Heres another concern. Due to our countries recent decisions in a geo-political aspect…will your people receive an american with open arms?
Oh absolutely. We generally don’t mix hospitality and politics. Remember, we’re a trading nation. Also remember, we are in Iraq.
Also remember, we’re largely below sea level and depend on levees for our safety …
In fact, you’re probably more likely to hear people ask you if you have any relatives affected by Katrina than hear them talk about Iraq.
Also, I estimate that at any given time there will be a minimum of 50.000 American tourists in the city who I suspect don’t feel too threatened, so you can derive some comfort in that.
(Oh and should you get here let me know of course, I might be able to contribute to making your stay a pleasant one, depending on where I am at the time.)
I may have to take you up on that. I appreciate your help.
This is more of a poll rather than a question to which we expect a factual answer. Let’s move it over to IMHO.

Doesn’t that leave him with a long commute to play baseball?
Prague here. Great place for a weekend party. Hotels are expensive, beer is cheap, girls are INCREDIBLE.
Swing by for a brew. Email me for specific info.

Germany. Military as well…have two bits of advice:
-
Travel on your own or with friends, not on military tours, unless you can’t afford to travel on your own. Experiencing Europe as a local instead of as a group of military personnel is 10x better. When I travel, I pretend I AM a local…I grow out my facial hair, speak only German (in the German speaking countries), and use my hobby as my profession if anyone asks (photography).
-
Travel every holiday weekend, every month. Doing that, I’ve seen a ton of Germany, been to several locations in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, the UK, Italy (and the Vatican), Czech Republic, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Greece. I also went to Kuwait, but that wasn’t my idea.
All that travel, and I only took leave to do it twice. All the rest was on 3 and 4 day weekends. If you’re short cash, drive somewhere close, but new to you. Stay in small hotels or bed and breakfasts. Learn some Italian if you don’t speak any.
Of all the places I’ve been, Rome and Athens are my two favorites, but I love history, and there’s just nothing like sitting on a rock at night on the Acropolis, or walking through the Roman Forum towards the Colosseum. I’ve also seen more art in 3 years than most people see in their lifetimes.
I think I might’ve met you…unless it was just a hairy German photographer.
If you plan on making it to London, check in with Nads, who are more than welcoming to stray dopers.
