I love this show. I haven’t been able to watch this season, since they re-did our cable, though.
I’m a fan, I don’t get it on cable either, but I am able to obtain the episodes through…ummmm…other means.
Of course, being a straight guy, a major part of the appeal for me is…well, let’s just say it’s not the sharp writing and high production values…
I just got hooked this season, since this is the first time that I’ve had Showtime.
I initially watched it for the potential of titillation, admittedly…but the storylines and characters genuinely intrigue me.
gahhhhhh, I just typed the longest post, and forgot to click the “remember me” thingy so it fuckin’ got erased! grumbles loudly
anyway. funny this should come up; I JUST started watching it like Tuesday night… I’m only on the 8th one of the first season, though (I’m renting it). so far I do like it, but I have some pretty significant bitches about it:
- I despise the Jenny character. she’s a selfish priggish little bitch whose writing sucks to unfathomable depths, her voice is like an insect crawling on my spine, and she looks like an ugly anorexic 12-year-old. I might be able to stand her were she played by someone else, but probably not.
- some episodes are just too damn somber. lighten up, dammit! the comedy/drama ratio needs to go way up.
- sometimes it just feels like I’m watching one really long chick flick. I dug myself that hole, though; I should’ve known it going in, seeing as there’s like, one penis in the whole show. (unless you count the one Shane’s probably got tucked up somewhere
)
[spoiling ahead] - Marina is starting to piss me off too. fuck this lying down and taking it every time Jenny or Tim comes and tells her where to stick it, like their relationship was her responsibility, and then taking Jenny back time and time again afterwards. I don’t like weak characters, and she especially doesn’t wear weakness well.
[end spoiling]
hehe. sorry 'bout that; been needing an appropriate venue for bitching, without going all-out fangirl & joining the bbs.
well, contrary to appearances, I do actually like the show… it’s pretty funny when it wants to be, and for some reason I can’t quite pin down (and with the exception of Jenny), I care what happens to the characters. they’re all just very human, and they don’t seem to be caricatures or stereotypes like I was expecting them to be. and I think Bette and Tina are just darling… it’s close to home, for me, because I want that sort of domestic happiness with my girlfriend someday. yeah, I’m sure they’ll eventually break up 'cause that’s the damn formula, but they’ll get back together. they’re the core of the show, and this is America, and that’s how these things work. (yay I <3 America)
also doesn’t hurt the show’s case that I’m slowly developing a huge crush on Jennifer Beals. >_<
I dunno, it looks like lesbians can be just as pointlessly self-destructive and hurtful as, well, men.
I like it. Love is too strong, though. I think the second season has been much stronger than the first.
nevermore: Brace yourself. Jenny gets more annoying as the season progresses. There is good news, though, after about the second episode of the second season, she actually starts becoming likeable. She’s developing into a strong woman and I like where they seem to be going with her.
There are lots of twists and turns ahead for all the characters, so I’ll not spoil it for you. Let’s just say that the actress playing Marina doesn’t seem to work well with others and the writers really mess with her character in season 2, despite her never appearing.
I love The L Word (especially after watching Season 2)! So does my ex. One of her usernames online is Soupchef, hee. Speaking of which, BRING BACK LARA!
And yes, I actually like Jenny. I understand her. No one else seems to “get” her.
I’ve been gobbling up Season 2. I think it makes the characters a lot more likeable and “human”. I especially like what they’re doing with Shane. I want to know what Helena’s up to, though. She’s in that “too good to be true” stage.
I liked her too, kung fu lola. Dana needs a smack in the head for screwing that up.
man, I wish I had showtime. as it is I guess I’ll just have to wait ‘til they put the second season on DVD… stupid video stores bein’ all slow… kicks pebbles
Okay, I’m one heterosexual guy who will come out of the video closet to announce that I like the “L Word” too. I originally watched it because Rosanna Arquette was a guest. That scene between her and Shane - wow. That was enough to convince me that this show was worth watching from then on.
Oh sure, it has those obligatory “girl on girl action” sequences, but I’m sure all males watch it to get in touch with feminist issues and develop sensitivity to the conflicts women face in contemporary society.
I wonder what the male to female viewership is for this show.
Homebrew & kung fu lola, I gotta ask: why did you like her? I thought she was pretty cookie-cutter, myself. didn’t seem to be much more than a pretty 2D vector for bringing up the issue of Dana’s not-out-ness.
(even though I’m probably the only one here for whom that’d be potentially spoilerish)
ewwwww. haven’t seen that episode, but thanks for the heads up so I won’t just vomit when she pops out of nowhere.
I’m with you on the girl action thing, though; that’s why I started watching too (and mmm, how sweet it is). insert devil smiley
I didn’t think I’d watch more than a few episodes, but what d’ya know, the storylines kinda interest me, and Jennifer Beals is too freakin’ yummy.
see, what I wonder is, what’s the gay-or-bi-female to still-in-denial-female ratio.
I started watching because I’m a fan of Mia Kirshner, but after watching a few episodes On Demand at a friend’s house, I can’t say I was very interested, aside from a few damn-Shane’s-hot moments.
OK, so it seems like a lot of you are just getting the early seasons on DVD…how many of you are actually watching the current season on Showtime? I don’t want to spoil things for you if you’re going to have to wait for the seasons to come out on DVD…but at the same time, maybe fans who are watching the current season can have some discussion…?
er. I think I’m pretty much the only one. >_<
if you guys want to talk about the current season, feel free; just stick “season 2 spoilers” or something like that in the subject line and I’ll know not to read it.
Nevermore
It’s funny that you think Rosanna Arquette isn’t pretty yet I think she is a knockout.
Funnier still is Jessica Beals is my favorite on the ‘L’ Word.
Yes to use your vernacular, she is “freakin’ yummy”.
