Who needs help with potential SDMB subscriptions?

When I pre-registered for the pay site, I expressed an interest in establishing a fund to help those who would like to post but can’t afford it. I have no idea how big or small a contingency that might be. If you, or someone you know, falls into that category, could you leave a note? Thanks.

Uhh–I’m like, a really poor college student wanna-be who’s having trouble just buying all the necessities I need from month to month like food, rent, and utilities.

But if it’s only a once-per-year fee, then even I probably shouldn’t have -too- much trouble finding the extra juice to scrounge up. Especially if I can find a job in this recovering economy.

Gee, I’d say me but it looks like I’ll be selling the computer to make rent for December. Thanks for asking, though.

(Thanks for the jacking-around, Unemployment Department! I’ll try my best to pan-handle outside your offices every day, if only so that I can practice my invective.)

Depending on what the fee actually is, I will either need help or be able to dish out $5-10 to help others.

That depends on how high the guys in accounting set the gate. Fifteen – Twenty bucks, I’ll be fine. At fifty bucks, I’ll have to butler in a Robb Reports mansion.

All this is still to be determined and whatever is decided will be administered through the Reader, I would think.

We’ll let you know as events develop.

It’s nice to see y’all are looking after one another.

Sign me up to help, I can afford to help out a Doper or two… though I won’t commit to a dollar amount until I know how it will be distributed (hopefully in a fair manner, disregarding things like post-count, etc.).

It’s going to be hard to administer!

Send me an e-mail, Lib.

Destitute doper here.

I’d love to help.

But can I recommend that it is done blindly? I would hate to see an arguement where someone came out and said “You’re only posting here because of me”

It’s nice that you want to assist people with being on the board more. I have seen this topic discussed a few times through the years & as you can see it hasn’t been implemented yet–& may not be–so Im taking a wait & see attitude.

I think it is awesome that you want to help those who can’t afford it as well.

I can afford it, but just don’t see paying out of principle. I understand the why, I just can’t see me paying for something when the money (no matter how miniscule) could go to something better like a charity instead. I’d rather give $20 to St.Jude’s then to the Reader.

Besides, I already feel like an outsider most of the time posting (hence my low post count). I see those staying around to pay being established high-post count people, even making me feel like more of an outsider. No thanks.

This was discussed a while back. A more complete list can be found here.

Looks like TubaDiva might be saying that any such fund will be administered by the Reader. So I’m sure it’s in good hands. Do you still need me to e-mail you, Astroboy?

Tuba, be sure to let us know when the fund is set up, and how we might be able to help. Thanks.

I’ll help out a little, this is a good idea.

On a more personal level, I wouldn’t participate in a Reader sponsored fund. It’s a generous offer, but I’d prefer to know to whom my money is going. Something tells me that the Reader’s interests would be more vested in offering money to anyone, without regard to who can and can’t afford it.

The Reader is a corporate entity and probably wouldn’t care to whom the money was distributed. I do. I would prefer to know exactly where my money is going. On that note, the other thread has already produced a list of people who are really going to need some additional help to stay on the board. When the time comes to help them out, I’ll be doing so on a personal level-- not in a community pot.
