Who protects the mayor’s of large cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago etc and is it 24 hour protection like the president?
In New York (for sure) the Mayor has a 24/7 detail from the NYPD. In the same way the Governor (of Maryland at least) has a contingent from the State Police.
It varies from city to city, but many mayors of large American cities have several police officers from the city’s police department who protect them 24 hours a day.
In Springfield, Homer Simpson did it for a little while.
In my town, large quanities of apathy.
In Chicago, Mayor Daley has a full time security detail.
Having seen the Mayor and his mutt at my favorite deli, he never had anyone with him other than some council member or such he was browbeating. And at City Hall, he paraded around with no one other than the usual flunkees.
Maybe this has changed in the past few years, since 9/11.
I think in most cities, they don’t really see the need for 24/7 protection of their mayor. I think the local police would generally get that responsibility, but that would be more of a technical issue than anything else, because elected officials at that level (with some of the larger cities excepted) just aren’t major targets.
